The Lord replied,“ When the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines,the Sidonians, the Amalekites and the Maonites oppressed you and you cried to me for help, did I not save you from their hands?But you have forsaken me and served other gods, so I will no longer save you.Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save you when you are in trouble!”But the Israelites said to the Lord,“ We have sinned. Do with us whatever you think best, but please rescue us now.”Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the Lord. And he could bear Israel’s misery no longer. (niv)

These are the numbers of the men armed for battle who came to David at Hebron to turn Saul’s kingdom over to him, as the Lord had said: (niv)

May God deal with Abner, be it ever so severely, if I do not do for David what the Lord promised him on oathand transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul and establish David’s throne over Israel and Judah from Dan to Beersheba.” (niv)

So he asked Jesse,“ Are these all the sons you have?”“ There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered.“ He is tending the sheep.” Samuel said,“ Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.”So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the Lord said,“ Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah. (niv)

But this is not what he intends, this is not what he has in mind; his purpose is to destroy, to put an end to many nations. (niv)

Evil will never leave the house of one who pays back evil for good. (niv)

“ Son of man, these men have set up idols in their hearts and put wicked stumbling blocks before their faces. Should I let them inquire of me at all?Therefore speak to them and tell them,‘ This is what the Sovereign Lord says: When any of the Israelites set up idols in their hearts and put a wicked stumbling block before their faces and then go to a prophet, I the Lord will answer them myself in keeping with their great idolatry.I will do this to recapture the hearts of the people of Israel, who have all deserted me for their idols.’“ Therefore say to the people of Israel,‘ This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Repent! When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, the king made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel. (niv)

Does the ax raise itself above the person who swings it, or the saw boast against the one who uses it? As if a rod were to wield the person who lifts it up, or a club brandish the one who is not wood! (niv)
