and did not inquire of the Lord. So the Lord put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.

He didn’t ask the Lord for advice. So the Lord put him to death. He turned the kingdom over to David. David was the son of Jesse.

He did not seek guidance from the Lord. Therefore the Lord put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.

instead of asking the Lord for guidance. So the Lord killed him and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.

So Samuel said to him,“ The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today, and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you.

But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”

Now the Lord said to Samuel,“ How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go; I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite. For I have provided Myself a king among his sons.”

And the Lord has done for Himself as He spoke by me. For the Lord has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor, David.

And when Saul inquired of the Lord, the Lord did not answer him, either by dreams or by Urim or by the prophets.

So the Lord said to the children of Israel,“ Did I not deliver you from the Egyptians and from the Amorites and from the people of Ammon and from the Philistines?Also the Sidonians and Amalekites and Maonites oppressed you; and you cried out to Me, and I delivered you from their hand.Yet you have forsaken Me and served other gods. Therefore I will deliver you no more.“ Go and cry out to the gods which you have chosen; let them deliver you in your time of distress.”And the children of Israel said to the Lord,“ We have sinned! Do to us whatever seems best to You; only deliver us this day, we pray.”So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the Lord. And His soul could no longer endure the misery of Israel.

Now these were the numbers of the divisions that were equipped for war, and came to David at Hebron to turn over the kingdom of Saul to him, according to the word of the Lord:

May God do so to Abner, and more also, if I do not do for David as the Lord has sworn to him—to transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul, and set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan to Beersheba.”

And Samuel said to Jesse,“ Are all the young men here?” Then he said,“ There remains yet the youngest, and there he is, keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse,“ Send and bring him. For we will not sit down till he comes here.”So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with bright eyes, and good-looking. And the Lord said,“ Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!”Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.

Yet he does not mean so, Nor does his heart think so; But it is in his heart to destroy, And cut off not a few nations.

Whoever rewards evil for good, Evil will not depart from his house.

“ Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts, and put before them that which causes them to stumble into iniquity. Should I let Myself be inquired of at all by them?“ Therefore speak to them, and say to them,‘ Thus says the Lord God:“ Everyone of the house of Israel who sets up his idols in his heart, and puts before him what causes him to stumble into iniquity, and then comes to the prophet, I the Lord will answer him who comes, according to the multitude of his idols,that I may seize the house of Israel by their heart, because they are all estranged from Me by their idols.”’“ Therefore say to the house of Israel,‘ Thus says the Lord GOD:“ Repent, turn away from your idols, and turn your faces away from all your abominations.

Therefore all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord. And they anointed David king over Israel.

Shall the ax boast itself against him who chops with it? Or shall the saw exalt itself against him who saws with it? As if a rod could wield itself against those who lift it up, Or as if a staff could lift up, as if it were not wood!
