He did not take the ark to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it to the house of Obed- Edom the Gittite.

and with them their relatives of the second rank, Zechariah, Ben, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattithiah, Eliphelehu, Mikneiah, Obed edom, and Jeiel, the gatekeepers.

And David was unwilling to move the ark of the Lord into the city of David with him; but David took it aside to the house of Obed edom, the Gittite.The ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed edom the Gittite for three months, and the Lord blessed Obed edom and all his household.

All these were of the sons of Obed edom; they and their sons and relatives were able men with strength for the service, sixty two from Obed edom.
