the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun,“ Do you think David is honoring your father by sending envoys to you to express sympathy? Haven’t his envoys come to you only to explore and spy out the country and overthrow it?”

The Ammonite commanders spoke to Hanun. They said,“ David has sent messengers to tell you he is sad. They say he wants to honor your father. But the real reason they’ve come is to look the land over. They want to destroy it.”

But the princes of the Ammonites said to Hanun,“ Do you think, because David has sent comforters to you, that he is honoring your father? Have not his servants come to you to search and to overthrow and to spy out the land?”

the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun,“ Do you really think these men are coming here to honor your father? No! David has sent them to spy out the land so they can come in and conquer it!”

the Ammonite leaders said to Hanun,“ Just because David has sent men with condolences for you, do you really believe he’s showing respect for your father? Instead, haven’t his emissaries come in order to scout out, overthrow, and spy on the land?”

But the commanders among the sons of Ammon said to Hanun,“ Do you think that David is honoring your father, in that he has sent comforters to you? Have his servants not come to you to search, to demolish, and to spy out the land?”

约瑟家去窥探伯特利，那城起先名叫路斯。探子看见一个人从城里出来，就对他说：“请你把进城的路指示我们，我们会厚待你。”

非利士人的领袖向亚吉发怒，对他说：“叫这人回去！叫他回到你指派他的地方去，不可让他同我们出征，免得他在阵上反成为我们的敌人。他用什么与他主人复和呢？岂不是用我们这些人的首级吗？

亚吉回答大卫说：“我知道你在我眼中是好人，如同上帝的使者一样，只是非利士人的领袖说：‘这人不可同我们上战场。’

五人回到琐拉和以实陶他们的弟兄那里。他们的弟兄对他们说：“你们怎么了？”他们说：“起来，我们上去攻打他们吧！我们已经窥探了那地，看哪，那地非常好。你们还要待在这里吗？不要再迟延了，立刻出发去得那地为业吧！你们去，必来到安居的百姓和两边辽阔的地。上帝已将那地方交在你们手中了；那里不缺地上的任何东西。”

约瑟想起从前所做的那两个梦，就对他们说：“你们是奸细，你们来是要窥探这地的虚实。”他们对他说：“我主啊，不是的，仆人们是来买粮的。我们都是同一个人的儿子，我们是诚实的人。仆人们并不是奸细。”约瑟对他们说：“不，你们一定是窥探这地的虚实来的。”他们说：“仆人们本是兄弟十二人，我们都是迦南地同一个人的儿子。看哪，最小的今日在我们父亲那里，有一个不在了。”约瑟对他们说：“我刚才对你们说过了，你们是奸细！我指着法老的性命起誓，若是你们最小的弟弟不到这里来，你们就不可以离开这里；这样你们就可以证实自己了。要派你们当中的一个人去，把你们的弟弟带来。至于你们，都要关在这里，好证实你们的话是不是真的。若不是，我指着法老的性命起誓，你们一定是奸细。”于是约瑟把他们一起都关在监里三天。第三天，约瑟对他们说：“我是敬畏上帝的，你们这么做就可以活。

但人从琐拉和以实陶派本族中的五个勇士，去窥探侦察那地，对他们说：“你们去侦察那地。”他们来到以法莲山区米迦的家中，就在那里住宿。

嫩的儿子约书亚从什亭暗中派两个人作探子，说：“你们去窥探那地和耶利哥。”于是二人去了，来到一个名叫喇合的妓女家里，在那里睡觉。有人告诉耶利哥王说：“看哪，今夜有以色列人到这里来窥探此地。”耶利哥王派人到喇合那里，说：“你要交出那来到你这里、进了你家的人，因为他们来是要窥探全地。”
