那时以东人多益站在扫罗的臣仆中，回答说：“我曾看见耶西的儿子去了挪伯，到亚希突的儿子亚希米勒那里。亚希米勒为他求问耶和华，并且给他食物，把非利士人歌利亚的刀也给了他。”王派人去召来祭司亚希突的儿子亚希米勒和他父亲的全家，就是在挪伯的祭司们；他们所有的人就来到王那里。扫罗说：“亚希突的儿子，你听着！”他说：“我主啊，我在这里！”扫罗问他：“你为什么和耶西的儿子同谋对付我呢？你给他食物和刀，并且为他求问神，好使他伺机反对我，就像今天这样！”亚希米勒回答王说：“在你所有的臣仆中，有谁像大卫那样忠诚呢？他是王的女婿，又是你的侍卫长，在你家中受尊重。我难道今天才开始为他求问神吗？绝对不是的。愿王不要加罪于王的仆人和我父的全家，因为对这一切事，无论大小，你的仆人都不知道。”王说：“亚希米勒，你和你父亲的全家都必定死！”王就对他身旁侍立的护卫兵说：“你们过去斩杀耶和华的祭司们，因为他们也与大卫联手，他们知道大卫逃走，却不告诉我。”但王的臣仆们不愿意伸手杀害耶和华的祭司。于是王对多益说：“你过去击杀祭司们。”以东人多益就过去击杀那些祭司。那天他杀了八十五个佩戴细麻布以弗得的人，并且把祭司城挪伯中无论男女、幼童婴儿都用刀剑击杀了，把牛、驴、羊，也用刀剑击杀了。亚希突的儿子亚希米勒有一个儿子，名叫亚比亚特，他逃脱了，逃走跟随了大卫。亚比亚特告诉大卫，扫罗杀了耶和华的祭司。大卫对亚比亚特说：“那天以东人多益在那里，我就知道他一定会告诉扫罗。是我连累了你父家所有人丧命！你住在我这里吧，不要害怕；寻索你性命的就是寻索我性命的，你在我这里可得保全。”
