那時以東人多益站在掃羅的臣僕中，回答說：「我曾看見耶西的兒子去了挪伯，到亞希突的兒子亞希米勒那裡。亞希米勒為他求問耶和華，並且給他食物，把非利士人歌利亞的刀也給了他。」王派人去召來祭司亞希突的兒子亞希米勒和他父親的全家，就是在挪伯的祭司們；他們所有的人就來到王那裡。掃羅說：「亞希突的兒子，你聽著！」他說：「我主啊，我在這裡！」掃羅問他：「你為什麼和耶西的兒子同謀對付我呢？你給他食物和刀，並且為他求問神，好使他伺機反對我，就像今天這樣！」亞希米勒回答王說：「在你所有的臣僕中，有誰像大衛那樣忠誠呢？他是王的女婿，又是你的侍衛長，在你家中受尊重。我難道今天才開始為他求問神嗎？絕對不是的。願王不要加罪於王的僕人和我父的全家，因為對這一切事，無論大小，你的僕人都不知道。」王說：「亞希米勒，你和你父親的全家都必定死！」王就對他身旁侍立的護衛兵說：「你們過去斬殺耶和華的祭司們，因為他們也與大衛聯手，他們知道大衛逃走，卻不告訴我。」但王的臣僕們不願意伸手殺害耶和華的祭司。於是王對多益說：「你過去擊殺祭司們。」以東人多益就過去擊殺那些祭司。那天他殺了八十五個佩戴細麻布以弗得的人，並且把祭司城挪伯中無論男女、幼童嬰兒都用刀劍擊殺了，把牛、驢、羊，也用刀劍擊殺了。亞希突的兒子亞希米勒有一個兒子，名叫亞比亞特，他逃脫了，逃走跟隨了大衛。亞比亞特告訴大衛，掃羅殺了耶和華的祭司。大衛對亞比亞特說：「那天以東人多益在那裡，我就知道他一定會告訴掃羅。是我連累了你父家所有人喪命！你住在我這裡吧，不要害怕；尋索你性命的就是尋索我性命的，你在我這裡可得保全。」
