Then an Israelite man brought into the camp a Midianite woman right before the eyes of Moses and the whole assembly of Israel while they were weeping at the entrance to the tent of meeting.When Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear in his handand followed the Israelite into the tent. He drove the spear into both of them, right through the Israelite man and into the woman’s stomach. Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped;but those who died in the plague numbered 24,000.The Lord said to Moses,“ Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites. Since he was as zealous for my honor among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal. (niv)

Moses sent them into battle, a thousand from each tribe, along with Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, who took with him articles from the sanctuary and the trumpets for signaling. (niv)

But Phinehas stood up and intervened, and the plague was checked.This was credited to him as righteousness for endless generations to come. (niv)

In earlier times Phinehas son of Eleazar was the official in charge of the gatekeepers, and the Lord was with him. (niv)

So the Israelites sent Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, to the land of Gilead— to Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh. (niv)

When Phinehas the priest and the leaders of the community— the heads of the clans of the Israelites— heard what Reuben, Gad and Manasseh had to say, they were pleased.And Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, said to Reuben, Gad and Manasseh,“ Today we know that the Lord is with us, because you have not been unfaithful to the Lord in this matter. Now you have rescued the Israelites from the Lord’s hand.”Then Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, and the leaders returned to Canaan from their meeting with the Reubenites and Gadites in Gilead and reported to the Israelites.
