那時掃羅正待在基比亞邊界米磯崙的石榴樹下，跟隨他的大約有六百人，

耶和華對基甸說：「我要用這三百舔水喝的人拯救你們，我要把米甸人交在你手中。讓其餘的人都回家吧。」

耶和華因此向祂的子民發怒，厭惡他們，使他們落在列邦的手中，受敵人的轄制。他們的敵人壓迫他們，奴役他們。祂多次拯救他們，他們卻執意背叛，陷入罪中不能自拔。

亞撒呼求他的上帝耶和華說：「耶和華啊，唯有你才能幫助弱小的勝過強大的。我們的上帝耶和華啊，求你幫助我們，因為我們依靠你，奉你的名迎戰這大軍。耶和華啊，你是我們的上帝，不要讓人勝過你。」

約拿單對拿兵器的年輕人說：「我們去那些未受割禮之人的軍營，也許耶和華會幫助我們。祂使人得勝不在乎人數多少。」
