王从那里经过的时候，他向王呼叫说：“你仆人出征，在战阵之中，忽然有一个人转过来，带了另一个人来见我，说：‘你看守这个人，他若是走失了，就要你替他偿命，否则你要支付三十公斤银子。’

As the king passed by, the prophet called out to him,“ Your servant went into the thick of the battle, and someone came to me with a captive and said,‘ Guard this man. If he is missing, it will be your life for his life, or you must pay a talent of silver.’

The king passed by. Then the prophet called out to him. He said,“ I went into the middle of the battle. Someone came to me with a prisoner. He said,‘ Guard this man. Don’t let him get away. If he does, you will pay for his life with yours. Or you can pay 75 pounds of silver.’

And as the king passed, he cried to the king and said,“ Your servant went out into the midst of the battle, and behold, a soldier turned and brought a man to me and said,‘ Guard this man; if by any means he is missing, your life shall be for his life, or else you shall pay a talent of silver.’

As the king passed by, the prophet called out to him,“ Sir, I was in the thick of battle, and suddenly a man brought me a prisoner. He said,‘ Guard this man; if for any reason he gets away, you will either die or pay a fine of seventy five pounds of silver!’

As the king was passing by, he cried out to the king and said,“ Your servant marched out into the middle of the battle. Suddenly, a man turned aside and brought someone to me and said,‘ Guard this man! If he is ever missing, it will be your life in place of his life, or you will weigh out seventy-five pounds of silver.’

And as the king passed by, he cried out to the king and said,“ Your servant went out into the midst of the battle; and behold, a man turned aside and brought a man to me and said,‘ Guard this man; if for any reason he goes missing, then your life shall be forfeited in place of his life, or else you shall pay a talent of silver.’

Now as the king passed by, he cried out to the king and said,“ Your servant went out into the midst of the battle; and there, a man came over and brought a man to me, and said,‘ Guard this man; if by any means he is missing, your life shall be for his life, or else you shall pay a talent of silver.’

And as the king passed by, he cried unto the king; and he said, Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle; and, behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man unto me, and said, Keep this man: if by any means he be missing, then shall thy life be for his life, or else thou shalt pay a talent of silver.

As the king was passing by, he cried out to the king and said,“ Your servant marched out into the middle of the battle. When the king passed by, he called out to the king,“ Your servant went out into the heat of the battle, and then a man turned aside and brought me a prisoner. He told me,‘ Guard this prisoner. If he ends up missing for any reason, you will pay with your life or with a talent of silver.’

As the king passed by, he cried to the king; and he said,“ Your servant went out into the middle of the battle; and behold, a man came over, and brought a man to me, and said,‘ Guard this man! If by any means he is missing, then your life shall be for his life, or else you shall pay a talent of silver.’

So they went in to make sacrifices and burnt offerings. Now Jehu had posted eighty men outside with this warning:“ If one of you lets any of the men I am placing in your hands escape, it will be your life for his life.” (niv)

Be careful that no one entices you by riches; do not let a large bribe turn you aside. (niv)

Jesus then began to speak to them in parables:“ A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a pit for the winepress and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place.At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard.But they seized him, beat him and sent him away empty-handed.Then he sent another servant to them; they struck this man on the head and treated him shamefully.He sent still another, and that one they killed. He sent many others; some of them they beat, others they killed.“ He had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all, saying,‘ They will respect my son.’“ But the tenants said to one another,‘ This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’So they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.“ What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others.Haven’t you read this passage of Scripture:“‘ The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone;the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?Then the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders looked for a way to arrest him because they knew he had spoken the parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd; so they left him and went away. (niv)

The Lord sent Nathan to David. When he came to him, he said,“ There were two men in a certain town, one rich and the other poor.The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle,but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food, drank from his cup and even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him.“ Now a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for the one who had come to him.”David burned with anger against the man and said to Nathan,“ As surely as the Lord lives, the man who did this must die!He must pay for that lamb four times over, because he did such a thing and had no pity.”Then Nathan said to David,“ You are the man! This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says:‘ I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul. (niv)

He will not accept any compensation; he will refuse a bribe, however great it is. (niv)

However, if payment is demanded, the owner may redeem his life by the payment of whatever is demanded. (niv)

No one can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for them— (niv)

The king asked her,“ What is troubling you?” She said,“ I am a widow; my husband is dead.I your servant had two sons. They got into a fight with each other in the field, and no one was there to separate them. One struck the other and killed him.Now the whole clan has risen up against your servant; they say,‘ Hand over the one who struck his brother down, so that we may put him to death for the life of his brother whom he killed; then we will get rid of the heir as well.’ They would put out the only burning coal I have left, leaving my husband neither name nor descendant on the face of the earth.” (niv)

When Jotham was told about this, he climbed up on the top of Mount Gerizim and shouted to them,“ Listen to me, citizens of Shechem, so that God may listen to you.One day the trees went out to anoint a king for themselves. They said to the olive tree,‘ Be our king.’“ But the olive tree answered,‘ Should I give up my oil, by which both gods and humans are honored, to hold sway over the trees?’“ Next, the trees said to the fig tree,‘ Come and be our king.’“ But the fig tree replied,‘ Should I give up my fruit, so good and sweet, to hold sway over the trees?’“ Then the trees said to the vine,‘ Come and be our king.’“ But the vine answered,‘ Should I give up my wine, which cheers both gods and humans, to hold sway over the trees?’“ Finally all the trees said to the thornbush,‘ Come and be our king.’“ The thornbush said to the trees,‘ If you really want to anoint me king over you, come and take refuge in my shade; but if not, then let fire come out of the thornbush and consume the cedars of Lebanon!’“ Have you acted honorably and in good faith by making Abimelek king? Have you been fair to Jerub- Baal and his family? Have you treated him as he deserves?Remember that my father fought for you and risked his life to rescue you from the hand of Midian.But today you have revolted against my father’s family. You have murdered his seventy sons on a single stone and have made Abimelek, the son of his female slave, king over the citizens of Shechem because he is related to you.So have you acted honorably and in good faith toward Jerub- Baal and his family today? If you have, may Abimelek be your joy, and may you be his, too!But if you have not, let fire come out from Abimelek and consume you, the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo, and let fire come out from you, the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo, and consume Abimelek!” (niv)

He said to the king,“ This is what the Lord says:‘ You have set free a man I had determined should die. Therefore it is your life for his life, your people for his people.’” (niv)

A person’s riches may ransom their life, but the poor cannot respond to threatening rebukes. (niv)

For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors,but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. (niv)
