亚实突人召集了非利士所有的首领，问他们：“我们如何处理以色列上帝的约柜？”他们答道：“把它送到迦特去。”于是，众人把以色列上帝的约柜送到迦特。约柜抵达迦特的时候，耶和华攻击那城，使那里的男女老少都患了毒疮，全城惊恐不已。于是，他们把约柜送往以革伦。以革伦的人看见上帝的约柜到了，就惊叫道：“他们把以色列上帝的约柜带来是要害死我们和我们的人民！”他们派人召集非利士的首领，说：“把以色列上帝的约柜送回原处吧，免得它杀害我们和我们的人民。”因为上帝重重地惩罚他们，全城都笼罩在死亡的恐惧中。

非利士人问：“我们该送什么作赔罪的礼物呢？”他们答道：“你们要按非利士首领的数目，送五个金毒疮和五只金鼠，因为你们和你们的首领都遭受了同样的灾难。
