After this David inquired of the Lord,“ Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?” And the Lord said to him,“ Go up.” David said,“ To which shall I go up?” And he said,“ To Hebron.”
And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. When they told David,“ It was the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul,”
Then Joshua blessed him, and he gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance.Therefore Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he wholly followed the Lord, the God of Israel.Now the name of Hebron formerly was Kiriath-arba.( Arba was the greatest man among the Anakim.) And the land had rest from war.
But Absalom sent secret messengers throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying,“ As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then say,‘ Absalom is king at Hebron!’”
