他从袋里拿出一块石子用投石器猛力抛去，石子击中歌利亚的额头，嵌了进去，他迎面栽倒在地。大卫就这样不用刀剑，只用投石器和一块石子战胜了那个非利士人，杀死了他。大卫跑到那非利士人身边，从他刀鞘里拔出刀杀了他，并割下他的头颅。非利士人看见自己的英雄死了，纷纷逃跑。以色列人和犹大人乘势吶喊，追杀非利士人，直追到迦特和以革伦的城门。通往迦特和以革伦的沙拉音大道上到处是非利士人的尸体。以色列军队追杀非利士人回来，又掳掠了他们的营地。

他和跟随他的人聚集起来，冲入战场，发现非利士人正互相残杀，乱作一团。从前加入非利士军队的希伯来人现在也倒戈加入扫罗和约拿单的以色列军队。那些躲在以法莲山区的以色列人听说非利士人溃逃，都出来紧紧地追杀他们。耶和华在那天使以色列人大获全胜，战事一直蔓延到伯·亚文。

非利士人与以色列人交战，以色列人败逃，许多人在基利波山被杀。非利士人穷追扫罗及其众子，杀了扫罗的儿子约拿单、亚比拿达和麦基舒亚。扫罗周围战事激烈，他被弓箭手发现、射成重伤，就对为他拿兵器的人说：“拔出你的刀来刺死我吧，免得那些未受割礼的人来刺杀和凌辱我。”但拿兵器的人非常害怕，不敢动手，扫罗就自己伏刀自尽了。侍从看见扫罗已死，也伏刀自尽了。这样，扫罗和他三个儿子，以及为他拿兵器的人和他的军队都死了。平原一带和约旦河对面的以色列人见以色列军败逃、扫罗及其众子已死，都弃城而逃。于是，非利士人占据了那些城邑。

那时撒母耳已经死了，以色列举国都为他哀悼，把他葬在他的家乡拉玛。当时，扫罗把所有占卜和行巫术的都逐出了以色列。非利士人集合起来，在书念扎营，扫罗率领以色列军队在基利波扎营。扫罗看见非利士军队声势浩大，感到胆战心惊，

扫罗四十岁登基。他在统治以色列的第二年，从以色列人中选出三千人，亲自带领其中的两千人到密抹和伯特利山，另外一千人和约拿单留在便雅悯境内的基比亚。他把其余的人遣散回家。约拿单攻打迦巴的非利士驻军，非利士人听到了这消息。于是，扫罗在各地吹响号角，通告希伯来人。以色列众人听说扫罗攻打非利士人的驻军，并听说非利士人对以色列人恨之入骨，便响应扫罗的号召，聚集在吉甲。非利士人调兵遣将，要攻打以色列。他们有三万辆战车和六千骑兵，步兵多如海边的沙。大军来到伯·亚文以东的密抹，驻扎在那里。

约拿单对拿兵器的年轻人说：“我们去那些未受割礼之人的军营，也许耶和华会帮助我们。祂使人得胜不在乎人数多少。”拿兵器的人答道：“就照你的意思，我会一心追随你。”约拿单说：“我们去他们那边，故意让他们发现。如果他们说，‘站住，等我们去你们那里！’我们就待在原地，不去他们那里。但如果他们说，‘你们来我们这里！’我们就去，因为那表示耶和华已经把他们交在我们手里了。”非利士的驻军看见二人走近，就说：“看！希伯来人从洞里爬出来了！”驻军对约拿单和拿兵器的人大喊：“上来，我们要教训教训你们。”约拿单就对拿兵器的人说：“跟着我爬上去，耶和华已经把他们交在以色列人手里了。”于是，约拿单就爬上去击杀非利士人，拿兵器的人紧随其后。他们首次出击，杀了约二十个非利士人，尸首倒在半亩大小的地上。营房、田野的所有非利士人，包括驻军和那些突击队都非常恐慌。大地震动，众人恐惧万分。扫罗在便雅悯境内基比亚的哨兵看见非利士军队四散奔逃，溃不成军。

你必怀孕生一个儿子，你不可为他剃头，因为他一出生就要归给上帝做拿细耳人。他要从非利士人手中拯救以色列人。”
