探囊取石、以繩發之、擊非利士人、深入顙際、遂仆於地。如是大闢以繩發石、擊非利士人而殺之、手不持刃。向前而趨、踐非利士人之身、拔刃出鞘、斬其首級。非利士眾見英武者已死、則潰而奔。以色列族、猶大人、並起、鼓譟追襲敵眾、入谷至於以革倫邑門、非利士人見殺者、尸橫沙勑音道、延至迦特以革倫。以色列族追非利士人、既畢其事、則旋軍刧幕。

乃率從者往戰、既至、觀敵自相攻擊以致敗績。昔有希百來人、自四方而來、從非利士人之營、今從掃羅約拿單以助以色列族。素匿於以法蓮山之以色列人、聞非利士人遁、則出以戰、而襲其後。戰於伯亞文、是時耶和華拯以色列族。○

非利士人攻以色列族。以色列族遁在吉破山、見殺者眾。非利士人追襲掃羅、殺其三子、約拿單、亞庇拿撻、麥基舒亞。掃羅戰敗、矢人射之、身負重傷、謂持兵之士曰、汝其拔刃刺我、恐未受割者刺我、加以狎侮。持兵之士懼甚、不敢奉命、掃羅觸刃而死。持兵之士見掃羅已死、亦觸刃偕亡。當日掃羅與三子、及持兵之士、暨其群從、俱亡。在谷相向之所、與約但東居民、見以色列人已遁、掃羅及其子已死、亦棄邑而逃。非利士人至而居之。

撒母耳已沒、以色列族眾葬於故邑拉馬、緣之哀哭、巫覡與卜神所憑者、掃羅驅逐於斯土。○非利士人集、於書念建營。掃羅集以色列族、建營於吉破。見非利士人之軍旅已至則懼、中心戰慄。

掃羅為以色列王、越至二年、簡於以色列族、得軍三千、二千從掃羅在密抹及伯特利山、一千從約拿單在便雅憫之其庇亞。餘民各歸故幕。約拿單在其庇亞、擊非利士人汛、其民風聞斯事、掃羅吹角、遍告希百來人。以色列族、聞掃羅擊非利士人汛、為非利士人所惡、則集於吉甲、群從掃羅。非利士人集、欲攻以色列族、率車三萬、騎六千、步卒如海沙之眾多、至伯亞文東之密抹建營。

約拿單謂持兵之少者曰、敵不受割禮、盍適彼汛、庶幾耶和華祐我、蓋耶和華欲援我民、眾寡俱可用也。持兵之士曰、盍往哉、爾所欲為、任意以行、我與爾有同心焉。約拿單曰、我儕二人由此至彼、使彼觀瞻。如彼曰、爾曹勿動、以俟我至。則我仍駐於己所、不往迎之。如彼曰、爾可來此、我則前往、耶和華將以之付於我手、此可為徵。二人遂出、使非利士人觀瞻。非利士人曰、希百來人素匿於巢穴、今已出矣。汛人告於約拿單及其持兵之士曰、爾可至此、我將示爾一事。約拿單告持兵之士曰、汝可相從、耶和華以彼付於以色列族手。約拿單攀巖而上、持兵之士隨焉。敵為約拿單所擊、仆於其前、持兵之士從而戮之。約拿單與持兵之士、始戮敵眾、約二十人、在半畝之間。敵之軍旅、以及鄉民、防禦之兵、流亡之寇、無不戰慄、地亦震動、上帝使之。在便雅憫之其庇亞、掃羅之戍卒、見敵軍漸散。

爾既懷妊生子、薙髮之刀不加其首、彼自生時、必離世故、奉事上帝、拯以色列族於非利士人手。
