You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed— God is our witness.

As you know, we never praised you if we didn’t mean it. We didn’t put on a mask to cover up any sinful desire. God is our witness that this is true.

For we never came with words of flattery, as you know, nor with a pretext for greed— God is witness.

Never once did we try to win you with flattery, as you well know. And God is our witness that we were not pretending to be your friends just to get your money!

having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; enticing unstedfast souls; having a heart exercised in covetousness; children of cursing;forsaking the right way, they went astray, having followed the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the hire of wrong- doing;

Now touching the things which I write unto you, behold, before God, I lie not.

For, uttering great swelling words of vanity, they entice in the lusts of the flesh, by lasciviousness, those who are just escaping from them that live in error;

And in covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose sentence now from of old lingereth not, and their destruction slumbereth not.

For the bishop must be blameless, as God’s steward; not self- willed, not soon angry, no brawler, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre;

For we are not as the many, corrupting the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God, speak we in Christ.

Therefore will I give their wives unto others, and their fields to them that shall possess them: for every one from the least even unto the greatest is given to covetousness; from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.

He that rebuketh a man shall afterward find more favor Than he that flattereth with the tongue.

I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience bearing witness with me in the Holy Spirit,

no brawler, no striker; but gentle, not contentious, no lover of money;

He that goeth about as a tale- bearer revealeth secrets; Therefore company not with him that openeth wide his lips.

Deacons in like manner must be grave, not double- tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;

that say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits,

but we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by the manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.

For they that are such serve not our Lord Christ, but their own belly; and by their smooth and fair speech they beguile the hearts of the innocent.

He that denounceth his friends for a prey, Even the eyes of his children shall fail.

Oh that there were one among you that would shut the doors, that ye might not kindle fire on mine altar in vain! I have no pleasure in you, saith Jehovah of hosts, neither will I accept an offering at your hand.

Yea, the dogs are greedy, they can never have enough; and these are shepherds that cannot understand: they have all turned to their own way, each one to his gain, from every quarter.

They speak falsehood every one with his neighbor: With flattering lip, and with a double heart, do they speak.Jehovah will cut off all flattering lips, The tongue that speaketh great things;

But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye shut the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye enter not in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering in to enter.

Woe unto them! for they went in the way of Cain, and ran riotously in the error of Balaam for hire, and perished in the gainsaying of Korah.

Let me not, I pray you, respect any man’s person; Neither will I give flattering titles unto any man.For I know not to give flattering titles; Else would my Maker soon take me away.
