此後，亞捫人的王死了，他的兒子哈嫩接替他作王。大衛說：「我要以恩慈對待納哈什的兒子哈嫩，就像他父親曾以恩慈對待我那樣。」於是大衛為哈嫩喪父一事派遣臣僕，藉著他們安慰他。大衛的臣僕來到亞捫人之地，但亞捫人的首領對他們的主哈嫩說：「你以為大衛是尊敬你父親，所以派人來安慰你嗎？大衛派遣臣僕來見你，難道不是為了探查這城，好窺探、傾覆它嗎？」哈嫩就抓住大衛的臣僕，把他們的鬍鬚剃掉一半，又把他們的衣服從臀部以下割去一半，然後放他們走。有人向大衛報告，大衛就派人去迎接他們，因為這些人受了極大的羞辱。王說：「你們可以住在耶利哥，等鬍鬚長好了再回來。」亞捫人知道大衛厭惡他們，就派人雇用伯利合的亞蘭人和瑣巴的亞蘭人步兵兩萬，還有瑪迦王的一千人，以及陀伯人一萬兩千。大衛聽說了，就派遣約押和全軍的勇士出戰。亞捫人出來，在自己的城門口擺開陣勢；瑣巴和利合的亞蘭人，以及陀伯人和瑪迦人，單獨在郊外擺陣。約押見自己腹背受敵，就從以色列所有精兵中挑選了一部分，擺陣迎戰亞蘭人，其餘的人交在他兄弟亞比篩手下，擺陣迎戰亞捫人。約押說：「如果亞蘭人強過我，你就過來幫助我；如果亞捫人強過你，我就過去幫助你。要堅強，我們要為我們的人民、為我們神的城鎮而堅強！願耶和華做他眼中看為好的事。」於是約押和跟隨他的人上前與亞蘭人作戰，亞蘭人從他面前逃跑。亞捫人見亞蘭人逃跑，也從亞比篩面前逃跑，逃進城裡。於是約押從亞捫人那裡撤離，回到耶路撒冷。
