“ And when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself in a book a copy of this law, approved by the Levitical priests.And it shall be with him, and he shall read in it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the Lord his God by keeping all the words of this law and these statutes, and doing them,that his heart may not be lifted up above his brothers, and that he may not turn aside from the commandment, either to the right hand or to the left, so that he may continue long in his kingdom, he and his children, in Israel.

“ Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah,not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord.

And they entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and with all their soul,but that whoever would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, should be put to death, whether young or old, man or woman.

Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it in the hearing of the people. And they said,“ All that the Lord has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient.”

Then Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the secretary,“ I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the Lord.” And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan.

And all the people gathered as one man into the square before the Water Gate. And they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses that the Lord had commanded Israel.So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could understand what they heard, on the first day of the seventh month.And he read from it facing the square before the Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women and those who could understand. And the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law.And Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden platform that they had made for the purpose. And beside him stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah on his right hand, and Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam on his left hand.And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was above all the people, and as he opened it all the people stood.

In the third year of his reign he sent his officials, Ben-hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Micaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah;and with them the Levites, Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tobadonijah; and with these Levites, the priests Elishama and Jehoram.And they taught in Judah, having the Book of the Law of the Lord with them. They went about through all the cities of Judah and taught among the people.

Besides being wise, the Preacher also taught the people knowledge, weighing and studying and arranging many proverbs with great care.The Preacher sought to find words of delight, and uprightly he wrote words of truth.

The small and the great are there, and the slave is free from his master.

Then Solomon said,“ The Lord has said that he would dwell in thick darkness.But I have built you an exalted house, a place for you to dwell in forever.”Then the king turned around and blessed all the assembly of Israel, while all the assembly of Israel stood.And he said,“ Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who with his hand has fulfilled what he promised with his mouth to David my father, saying,‘ Since the day that I brought my people out of the land of Egypt, I chose no city out of all the tribes of Israel in which to build a house, that my name might be there, and I chose no man as prince over my people Israel;but I have chosen Jerusalem that my name may be there, and I have chosen David to be over my people Israel.’Now it was in the heart of David my father to build a house for the name of the Lord, the God of Israel.But the Lord said to David my father,‘ Whereas it was in your heart to build a house for my name, you did well that it was in your heart.Nevertheless, it is not you who shall build the house, but your son who shall be born to you shall build the house for my name.’Now the Lord has fulfilled his promise that he made. For I have risen in the place of David my father and sit on the throne of Israel, as the Lord promised, and I have built the house for the name of the Lord, the God of Israel.And there I have set the ark, in which is the covenant of the Lord that he made with the people of Israel.”

Then Shaphan the secretary told the king,“ Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.” And Shaphan read from it before the king.And when the king heard the words of the Law, he tore his clothes.

You shall not be partial in judgment. You shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not be intimidated by anyone, for the judgment is God’s. And the case that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.’

And the king commanded all the people,“ Keep the Passover to the Lord your God, as it is written in this Book of the Covenant.”

Now the king of Syria had commanded the captains of his chariots,“ Fight with neither small nor great, but only with the king of Israel.”

Thus says the Lord, Behold, I will bring disaster upon this place and upon its inhabitants, all the curses that are written in the book that was read before the king of Judah.
