“ Also it shall be, when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write for himself a copy of this law in a book, from the one before the priests, the Levites.And it shall be with him, and he shall read it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the Lord his God and be careful to observe all the words of this law and these statutes,that his heart may not be lifted above his brethren, that he may not turn aside from the commandment to the right hand or to the left, and that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he and his children in the midst of Israel.

“ Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah—not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the Lord.

Then they entered into a covenant to seek the Lord God of their fathers with all their heart and with all their soul;and whoever would not seek the Lord God of Israel was to be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman.

Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read in the hearing of the people. And they said,“ All that the Lord has said we will do, and be obedient.”

Then Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe,“ I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the Lord.” And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan.

Now all the people gathered together as one man in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate; and they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded Israel.So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly of men and women and all who could hear with understanding on the first day of the seventh month.Then he read from it in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate from morning until midday, before the men and women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law.So Ezra the scribe stood on a platform of wood which they had made for the purpose; and beside him, at his right hand, stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Urijah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah; and at his left hand Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam.And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up.

Also in the third year of his reign he sent his leaders, Ben-Hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Michaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah.And with them he sent Levites: Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tobadonijah— the Levites; and with them Elishama and Jehoram, the priests.So they taught in Judah, and had the Book of the Law of the Lord with them; they went throughout all the cities of Judah and taught the people.

And moreover, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yes, he pondered and sought out and set in order many proverbs.The Preacher sought to find acceptable words; and what was written was upright— words of truth.

The small and great are there, And the servant is free from his master.

Then Solomon spoke:“ The Lord said He would dwell in the dark cloud.I have surely built You an exalted house, And a place for You to dwell in forever.”Then the king turned around and blessed the whole assembly of Israel, while all the assembly of Israel was standing.And he said:“ Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, who has fulfilled with His hands what He spoke with His mouth to my father David, saying,‘ since the day that I brought My people out of the land of Egypt, I have chosen no city from any tribe of Israel in which to build a house, that My name might be there, nor did I choose any man to be a ruler over My people Israel.Yet I have chosen Jerusalem, that My name may be there, and I have chosen David to be over My people Israel.’Now it was in the heart of my father David to build a temple for the name of the Lord God of Israel.But the Lord said to my father David,‘ Whereas it was in your heart to build a temple for My name, you did well in that it was in your heart.Nevertheless you shall not build the temple, but your son who will come from your body, he shall build the temple for My name.’So the Lord has fulfilled His word which He spoke, and I have filled the position of my father David, and sit on the throne of Israel, as the Lord promised; and I have built the temple for the name of the Lord God of Israel.And there I have put the ark, in which is the covenant of the Lord which He made with the children of Israel.”

Then Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying,“ Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.” And Shaphan read it before the king.Thus it happened, when the king heard the words of the Law, that he tore his clothes.

You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small as well as the great; you shall not be afraid in any man’s presence, for the judgment is God’s. The case that is too hard for you, bring to me, and I will hear it.’

Then the king commanded all the people, saying,“ Keep the Passover to the Lord your God, as it is written in this Book of the Covenant.”

Now the king of Syria had commanded the captains of the chariots who were with him, saying,“ Fight with no one small or great, but only with the king of Israel.”

“ Thus says the Lord:‘ Behold, I will bring calamity on this place and on its inhabitants, all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah,
