為此，我不在你們那裡的時候寫了這些事，好讓我來到的時候，不必用主所賜給我的權柄嚴厲地對待你們。這權柄是為了造就人，並不是為了拆毀人。

我暌違時書此、俾晤對時無事嚴厲、依主賜我之權以建立、非傾覆也、○

余暌違時、以書遺爾、使我與爾晤對、不事嚴法、依主所賜之權、非以敗人、乃以輔德、

今我與爾相離、故以此書達爾、使我與爾覿面時、不用嚴法、循主所賜我之權、此權主賜我、乃為建德、非為敗壞也、

吾在與爾相暌之時、書此種切、庶幾與爾相晤時、無庸秉持主所授我之大權、以懲惡徒、而盡吾之職責、則幸甚矣！蓋此大權所以輔人成德、非所以致人傾毀也。

This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when I come I may not have to be harsh in my use of authority— the authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not for tearing you down.

That’s why I write these things before I come to you. Then when I do come, I won’t have to be hard on you when I use my authority. The Lord gave me the authority to build you up. He didn’t give it to me to tear you down.

For this reason I write these things while I am away from you, that when I come I may not have to be severe in my use of the authority that the Lord has given me for building up and not for tearing down.

I am writing this to you before I come, hoping that I won’t need to deal severely with you when I do come. For I want to use the authority the Lord has given me to strengthen you, not to tear you down.

This is why I am writing these things while absent, so that when I am there I may not have to deal harshly with you, in keeping with the authority the Lord gave me for building up and not for tearing down.

For this reason I am writing these things while absent, so that when present I need not use severity, in accordance with the authority which the Lord gave me for building up and not for tearing down.

Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the authority which the Lord has given me for edification and not for destruction.

For this cause I write these things while absent, that I may not when present deal sharply, according to the authority which the Lord gave me for building up, and not for casting down.

This is why I am writing these things while absent, that when I am there I will not use severity, in keeping with the authority the Lord gave me for building up and not for tearing down.

So even if I boast somewhat freely about the authority the Lord gave us for building you up rather than tearing you down, I will not be ashamed of it. (niv)

I wrote as I did, so that when I came I would not be distressed by those who should have made me rejoice. I had confidence in all of you, that you would all share my joy. (niv)

This saying is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith (niv)

I beg you that when I come I may not have to be as bold as I expect to be toward some people who think that we live by the standards of this world. (niv)

For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. (niv)

What do you prefer? Shall I come to you with a rod of discipline, or shall I come in love and with a gentle spirit? (niv)

For I am afraid that when I come I may not find you as I want you to be, and you may not find me as you want me to be. I fear that there may be discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorder.I am afraid that when I come again my God will humble me before you, and I will be grieved over many who have sinned earlier and have not repented of the impurity, sexual sin and debauchery in which they have indulged. (niv)

I already gave you a warning when I was with you the second time. I now repeat it while absent: On my return I will not spare those who sinned earlier or any of the others, (niv)
