through glory and dishonor, bad report and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors;

We serve God in times of glory and shame. We serve him whether the news about us is bad or good. We are true to our calling. But people treat us as if we were pretenders.

We serve God whether people honor us or despise us, whether they slander us or praise us. We are honest, but they call us impostors.

He welcomed us to his home and showed us generous hospitality for three days.His father was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him and, after prayer, placed his hands on him and healed him.When this had happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured.They honored us in many ways; and when we were ready to sail, they furnished us with the supplies we needed. When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language,“ The gods have come down to us in human form!”Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because he was the chief speaker.The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates because he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them.But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of this, they tore their clothes and rushed out into the crowd, shouting:“ Friends, why are you doing this? We too are only human, like you. We are bringing you good news, telling you to turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heavens and the earth and the sea and everything in them.In the past, he let all nations go their own way.Yet he has not left himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.”Even with these words, they had difficulty keeping the crowd from sacrificing to them.Then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium and won the crowd over. They stoned Paul and dragged him outside the city, thinking he was dead.But after the disciples had gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe. (niv)

“ A man named Ananias came to see me. He was a devout observer of the law and highly respected by all the Jews living there. (niv)

His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. (niv)

Let us, then, go to him outside the camp, bearing the disgrace he bore. (niv)

The men replied,“ We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God- fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to ask you to come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say.” (niv)
