Again the king sent to him another captain of fifty men with his fifty. And he answered and said to him,“ O man of God, this is the king’s order,‘ Come down quickly!’”

So the king again sent to him another captain of fifty with his fifty men. And he said to him,“ You man of God, this is what the king says:‘ Come down quickly!’ ”

Then he sent to him another captain of fifty with his fifty men. And he answered and said to him:“ Man of God, thus has the king said,‘ Come down quickly!’”

And again he sent unto him another captain of fifty with his fifty. And he answered and said unto him, O man of God, thus hath the king said, Come down quickly.

The king sent another captain and his fifty soldiers to retrieve Elijah. He went up and told him,“ Prophet, this is what the king says,‘ Come down at once!’”

Again he sent to him another captain of fifty with his fifty. He answered him,“ Man of God, the king has said,‘ Come down quickly!’”

Then watch: If it goes up the road to its homeland toward Beth-shemesh, it is the LORD who has made this terrible trouble for us. However, if it doesn’t, we will know that it was not his hand that punished us— it was just something that happened to us by chance.”

LORD, don’t your eyes look for faithfulness? You have struck them, but they felt no pain. You finished them off, but they refused to accept discipline. They made their faces harder than rock, and they refused to return.

The scoundrel’s weapons are destructive; he hatches plots to destroy the needy with lies, even when the poor person says what is right.

Then the king ordered the guards standing by him,“ Turn and kill the priests of the LORD because they sided with David. For they knew he was fleeing, but they didn’t tell me.” But the king’s servants would not lift a hand to execute the priests of the LORD.So the king said to Doeg,“ Go and execute the priests!” So Doeg the Edomite went and executed the priests himself. On that day, he killed eighty-five men who wore linen ephods.He also struck down Nob, the city of the priests, with the sword— both men and women, infants and nursing babies, oxen, donkeys, and sheep.

“ Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered.“ I am he,” Jesus told them. Judas, who betrayed him, was also standing with them.When Jesus told them,“ I am he,” they stepped back and fell to the ground.Then he asked them again,“ Who is it that you’re seeking?”“ Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.“ I told you I am he,” Jesus replied.“ So if you’re looking for me, let these men go.”This was to fulfill the words he had said:“ I have not lost one of those you have given me.”Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear.( The servant’s name was Malchus.)At that, Jesus said to Peter,“ Put your sword away! Am I not to drink the cup the Father has given me?”Then the company of soldiers, the commander, and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus and tied him up.

The next day the entire Israelite community complained about Moses and Aaron, saying,“ You have killed the LORD’s people!”

saying,“ What should we do with these men? For an obvious sign has been done through them, clear to everyone living in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.But so that this does not spread any further among the people, let’s threaten them against speaking to anyone in this name again.”

LORD, your hand is lifted up to take action, but they do not see it. Let them see your zeal for your people and be put to shame. Let fire consume your adversaries.

The men who were holding Jesus started mocking and beating him.After blindfolding him, they kept asking,“ Prophesy! Who was it that hit you?”

Then Herod, when he realized that he had been outwitted by the wise men, flew into a rage. He gave orders to massacre all the boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, in keeping with the time he had learned from the wise men.

If a ruler listens to lies, all his officials will be wicked.
