The king of Assyria took the people of Israel away from their own land. He sent them off to Assyria. He made some of them live in Halah. He made others live in Gozan on the Habor River. And he made others live in the towns of the Medes.

At that time the king of Assyria exiled the Israelites to Assyria and placed them in colonies in Halah, along the banks of the Habor River in Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.

In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria, and he carried the Israelites away to Assyria and placed them in Halah, and on the Habor, the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.

You took up the tent of Moloch and the star of your god Rephan, the images that you made to worship; and I will send you into exile beyond Babylon.’

For all this his anger has not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.The people did not turn to him who struck them, nor inquire of the Lord of hosts.So the Lord cut off from Israel head and tail, palm branch and reed in one day—the elder and honored man is the head, and the prophet who teaches lies is the tail;for those who guide this people have been leading them astray, and those who are guided by them are swallowed up.Therefore the Lord does not rejoice over their young men, and has no compassion on their fatherless and widows; for everyone is godless and an evildoer, and every mouth speaks folly. For all this his anger has not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.For wickedness burns like a fire; it consumes briers and thorns; it kindles the thickets of the forest, and they roll upward in a column of smoke.Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts the land is scorched, and the people are like fuel for the fire; no one spares another.They slice meat on the right, but are still hungry, and they devour on the left, but are not satisfied; each devours the flesh of his own arm,Manasseh devours Ephraim, and Ephraim devours Manasseh; together they are against Judah. For all this his anger has not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.

Seek the Lord and live, lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and it devour, with none to quench it for Bethel,

Woe to Assyria, the rod of my anger; the staff in their hands is my fury!

for before the boy knows how to cry‘ My father’ or‘ My mother,’ the wealth of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be carried away before the king of Assyria.”

For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin. And within sixty-five years Ephraim will be shattered from being a people.

Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, devoting them to destruction. And shall you be delivered?

They shall not remain in the land of the Lord, but Ephraim shall return to Egypt, and they shall eat unclean food in Assyria.

“ Did you bring to me sacrifices and offerings during the forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?You shall take up Sikkuth your king, and Kiyyun your star-god— your images that you made for yourselves,and I will send you into exile beyond Damascus,” says the Lord, whose name is the God of hosts.

shall I not do to Jerusalem and her idols as I have done to Samaria and her images?”

Israel is swallowed up; already they are among the nations as a useless vessel.For they have gone up to Assyria, a wild donkey wandering alone; Ephraim has hired lovers.

Hear this word that I take up over you in lamentation, O house of Israel:“ Fallen, no more to rise, is the virgin Israel; forsaken on her land, with none to raise her up.”For thus says the Lord God:“ The city that went out a thousand shall have a hundred left, and that which went out a hundred shall have ten left to the house of Israel.”
