『你辱罵誰，褻瀆誰，揚起聲來，高舉眼目攻擊誰呢？你攻擊的是以色列的聖者。你藉你的使者辱罵主說：我率領許多戰車登上高山，到黎巴嫩的頂端；我要砍伐其中高大的香柏樹和上好的松樹；我必進到極遙遠的住所，進入最茂盛的森林裏。我已經在外邦挖井喝水；我必用腳掌踏乾埃及一切的河流。『你豈沒有聽見我早先所定、古時所立、現今實現的事嗎？就是讓你去毀壞堅固的城鎮，使它們變為廢墟；城裏的居民力量微小，他們驚惶羞愧；像野草，像青菜，如房頂上的草，又如未長成而枯乾的禾稼。『你坐下，你出去，你進來，你向我發烈怒，我都知道。因你向我發烈怒，你的狂傲上達我耳中，我要用鈎子鈎住你的鼻子，將嚼環放在你口裏，使你從原路轉回去。』「這是給你的預兆：你們今年要吃野生的，明年也要吃自長的；後年，你們就要耕種收割，栽葡萄園，吃其中的果子。猶大家所逃脫剩餘的，仍要往下扎根，向上結果。必有剩餘的民從耶路撒冷而出，有逃脫的人從錫安山而來。萬軍之耶和華的熱心必成就這事。「所以耶和華論亞述王如此說：他必不得來到這城，也不在這裏射箭，不得拿盾牌到城前，也不建土堆攻城。他從哪條路來，必從那條路回去，必不得來到這城。這是耶和華說的。因我為自己的緣故，又為我僕人大衛的緣故，必保護拯救這城。」當夜，耶和華的使者出去，在亞述營中殺了十八萬五千人。清早有人起來，看哪，都是死屍。亞述王西拿基立就拔營回去，住在尼尼微。一日，他在他的神明尼斯洛廟裏叩拜，他兒子亞得米勒和沙利色用刀殺了他，然後逃到亞拉臘地；他兒子以撒‧哈頓接續他作王。

他派使者來見約西亞，說：「猶大王啊，我跟你有甚麼相干呢？我今日來不是要攻打你，而是要攻打與我爭戰之家，並且神吩咐我從速行事。你不要干預與我同在的神，免得他毀滅你。」

禍哉！亞述，我怒氣的棍！他們手中的杖是我的惱恨。我要差遣他攻擊褻瀆的國，吩咐他對付我所惱怒的民，搶走擄物，奪取掠物，將他們踐踏，如同街上的泥土一般。

老先知對他說：「我也是先知，和你一樣。有天使遵照耶和華的話對我說：『你去帶他一同回你的家，給他吃飯喝水。』」老先知在欺騙他。

城中若吹角，百姓豈不戰兢嗎？災禍若臨到一城，豈非耶和華所降的嗎？
