About that time Hezekiah became deathly ill, and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to visit him. He gave the king this message:“ This is what the Lord says: Set your affairs in order, for you are going to die. You will not recover from this illness.”

In those days Hezekiah was sick and dying. Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came to him, and said to him,“ Yahweh says,‘ Set your house in order; for you will die, and not live.’”

About that time Hezekiah became deathly ill, and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to visit him. He gave the king this message:“ This is what the Lord says:‘ Set your affairs in order, for you are going to die. You will not recover from this illness.’”When Hezekiah heard this, he turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord,“ Remember, O Lord, how I have always been faithful to you and have served you single mindedly, always doing what pleases you.” Then he broke down and wept bitterly.Then this message came to Isaiah from the Lord:“ Go back to Hezekiah and tell him,‘ This is what the Lord, the God of your ancestor David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears. I will add fifteen years to your life,and I will rescue you and this city from the king of Assyria. Yes, I will defend this city.“‘ And this is the sign from the Lord to prove that he will do as he promised:I will cause the sun’s shadow to move ten steps backward on the sundial of Ahaz!’” So the shadow on the sundial moved backward ten steps.When King Hezekiah was well again, he wrote this poem:I said,“ In the prime of my life, must I now enter the place of the dead? Am I to be robbed of the rest of my years?”I said,“ Never again will I see the Lord God while still in the land of the living. Never again will I see my friends or be with those who live in this world.My life has been blown away like a shepherd’s tent in a storm. It has been cut short, as when a weaver cuts cloth from a loom. Suddenly, my life was over.I waited patiently all night, but I was torn apart as though by lions. Suddenly, my life was over.Delirious, I chattered like a swallow or a crane, and then I moaned like a mourning dove. My eyes grew tired of looking to heaven for help. I am in trouble, Lord. Help me!”But what could I say? For he himself sent this sickness. Now I will walk humbly throughout my years because of this anguish I have felt.Lord, your discipline is good, for it leads to life and health. You restore my health and allow me to live!Yes, this anguish was good for me, for you have rescued me from death and forgiven all my sins.For the dead cannot praise you; they cannot raise their voices in praise. Those who go down to the grave can no longer hope in your faithfulness.Only the living can praise you as I do today. Each generation tells of your faithfulness to the next.Think of it— the Lord is ready to heal me! I will sing his praises with instruments every day of my life in the Temple of the Lord.Isaiah had said to Hezekiah’s servants,“ Make an ointment from figs and spread it over the boil, and Hezekiah will recover.”And Hezekiah had asked,“ What sign will prove that I will go to the Temple of the Lord?”

About that time Hezekiah became deathly ill. He prayed to the Lord, who healed him and gave him a miraculous sign.But Hezekiah did not respond appropriately to the kindness shown him, and he became proud. So the Lord’s anger came against him and against Judah and Jerusalem.Then Hezekiah humbled himself and repented of his pride, as did the people of Jerusalem. So the Lord’s anger did not fall on them during Hezekiah’s lifetime.

If I announce that a certain nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down, and destroyed,but then that nation renounces its evil ways, I will not destroy it as I had planned.And if I announce that I will plant and build up a certain nation or kingdom,but then that nation turns to evil and refuses to obey me, I will not bless it as I said I would.

Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent this message to Hezekiah:“ This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I have heard your prayer about King Sennacherib of Assyria.

When Ahithophel realized that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey, went to his hometown, set his affairs in order, and hanged himself. He died there and was buried in the family tomb.

And he certainly was ill; in fact, he almost died. But God had mercy on him— and also on me, so that I would not have one sorrow after another.

On the day Jonah entered the city, he shouted to the crowds:“ Forty days from now Nineveh will be destroyed!”The people of Nineveh believed God’s message, and from the greatest to the least, they declared a fast and put on burlap to show their sorrow.When the king of Nineveh heard what Jonah was saying, he stepped down from his throne and took off his royal robes. He dressed himself in burlap and sat on a heap of ashes.Then the king and his nobles sent this decree throughout the city:“ No one, not even the animals from your herds and flocks, may eat or drink anything at all.People and animals alike must wear garments of mourning, and everyone must pray earnestly to God. They must turn from their evil ways and stop all their violence.Who can tell? Perhaps even yet God will change his mind and hold back his fierce anger from destroying us.”When God saw what they had done and how they had put a stop to their evil ways, he changed his mind and did not carry out the destruction he had threatened.

And he sent Eliakim the palace administrator, Shebna the court secretary, and the leading priests, all dressed in burlap, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz.

For he risked his life for the work of Christ, and he was at the point of death while doing for me what you couldn’t do from far away.
