婦遂往告上帝僕、上帝僕曰、鬻油償債、所餘者、爾與子賴以度日、○

婦至上帝僕所以告。彼曰、可鬻此油、以償所貸之金、尚有餘焉、爾與爾子、以供日用。○

婦至神人前告之、神人曰、爾往售油償債、所餘者、爾與子可賴以度日、○

She went and told the man of God, and he said,“ Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left.”

So she came and told the man of God. And he said,“ Go, sell the oil and pay your debt, and you and your sons can live on the rest.”

She went and told the prophet. He said,“ Go, sell the olive oil. Repay your creditor, and then you and your sons can live off the rest of the profit.”

You know how you should follow our example. We worked when we were with you.We didn’t eat anyone’s food without paying for it. In fact, it was just the opposite. We worked night and day. We worked very hard so that we wouldn’t cause any expense to any of you.We worked, even though we have the right to receive help from you. We did it in order to be a model for you to follow.Even when we were with you, we gave you a rule. We said,“ Anyone who won’t work shouldn’t be allowed to eat.”We hear that some people among you don’t want to work and are making trouble. They aren’t really busy. Instead, they are bothering others.We belong to the Lord Jesus Christ. So we strongly command people like that to settle down. They have to earn the food they eat.

Brothers and sisters, I am sure you remember how hard we worked. We labored night and day while we preached to you God’s good news. We didn’t want to cause you any expense.You are witnesses of how we lived among you believers. God is also a witness that we were holy and godly and without blame.

Finally, my brothers and sisters, always think about what is true. Think about what is noble, right and pure. Think about what is lovely and worthy of respect. If anything is excellent or worthy of praise, think about those kinds of things.

But a message from God came to Shemaiah. He was a man of God. God said to him,

Then unbelievers will have respect for your everyday life. And you won’t have to depend on anyone.

Don’t pay back evil with evil. Be careful to do what everyone thinks is right.

Sinful people borrow and don’t pay back. But those who are godly give freely to others.
