While Absalom was offering sacrifices, he also sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counselor, to come from Giloh, his hometown. And so the conspiracy gained strength, and Absalom’s following kept on increasing.

But to the wicked person, God says:“ What right have you to recite my laws or take my covenant on your lips?You hate my instruction and cast my words behind you.When you see a thief, you join with him; you throw in your lot with adulterers.You use your mouth for evil and harness your tongue to deceit.You sit and testify against your brother and slander your own mother’s son.When you did these things and I kept silent, you thought I was exactly like you. But I now arraign you and set my accusations before you. (niv)

Balaam said,“ Build me seven altars here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me.” (niv)

Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bull and a ram on each altar. (niv)

In those letters she wrote:“ Proclaim a day of fasting and seat Naboth in a prominent place among the people. (niv)

Absalom said to Ahithophel,“ Give us your advice. What should we do?”Ahithophel answered,“ Sleep with your father’s concubines whom he left to take care of the palace. Then all Israel will hear that you have made yourself obnoxious to your father, and the hands of everyone with you will be more resolute.”So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof, and he slept with his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel.Now in those days the advice Ahithophel gave was like that of one who inquires of God. The sacrifice of the wicked is detestable— how much more so when brought with evil intent! (niv)

Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom; listen to the instruction of our God, you people of Gomorrah!“ The multitude of your sacrifices— what are they to me?” says the Lord.“ I have more than enough of burnt offerings, of rams and the fat of fattened animals; I have no pleasure in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats.When you come to appear before me, who has asked this of you, this trampling of my courts?Stop bringing meaningless offerings! Your incense is detestable to me. New Moons, Sabbaths and convocations— I cannot bear your worthless assemblies.Your New Moon feasts and your appointed festivals I hate with all my being. They have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them.When you spread out your hands in prayer, I hide my eyes from you; even when you offer many prayers, I am not listening.
