David went just beyond the top of the Mount of Olives. Ziba was waiting there to meet him. He was Mephibosheth’s manager. He had several donkeys with saddles on them. They were carrying 200 loaves of bread and 100 raisin cakes. They were also carrying 100 fig cakes and a bottle of wine. The bottle was made out of animal skin.

When David had passed a little beyond the summit, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth met him, with a couple of donkeys saddled, bearing two hundred loaves of bread, a hundred bunches of raisins, a hundred of summer fruits, and a skin of wine.

David said,“ Mephibosheth!”“ I am your servant,” he replied.“ Don’t be afraid,” David said to him,“ since I intend to show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all your grandfather Saul’s fields, and you will always eat meals at my table.”Mephibosheth paid homage and said,“ What is your servant that you take an interest in a dead dog like me?”Then the king summoned Saul’s attendant Ziba and said to him,“ I have given to your master’s grandson all that belonged to Saul and his family.You, your sons, and your servants are to work the ground for him, and you are to bring in the crops so your master’s grandson will have food to eat. But Mephibosheth, your master’s grandson, is always to eat at my table.” Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.Ziba said to the king,“ Your servant will do all my lord the king commands.” So Mephibosheth ate at David’s table just like one of the king’s sons.Mephibosheth had a young son whose name was Mica. All those living in Ziba’s house were Mephibosheth’s servants.However, Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem because he always ate at the king’s table. His feet had been injured.

By justice a king brings stability to a land, but a person who demands“ contributions” demolishes it.A person who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet.

As for me, I am going to live in Mizpah to represent you before the Chaldeans who come to us. As for you, gather wine, summer fruit, and oil, place them in your storage jars, and live in the cities you have captured.”

How sad for me! For I am like one who— when the summer fruit has been gathered after the gleaning of the grape harvest— finds no grape cluster to eat, no early fig, which I crave.

So Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a wineskin, and one young goat and sent them by his son David to Saul.

The Lord GOD showed me this: a basket of summer fruit.

A person’s gift opens doors for him and brings him before the great.
