以色列各支派的人都在紛紛議論：「王曾把我們從眾仇敵和非利士人手中救出來。如今他為了躲避押沙龍而逃離本國。

直到上帝擊殺他們的時候，他們才回轉，誠心尋求上帝。他們才想起上帝是他們的磐石，至高的上帝是他們的救贖主。他們卻虛情假意，滿口謊言。他們不忠於祂，也不信守祂的約。

我要撇下他們，返回我的居所，直到他們知罪來尋求我。在苦難的日子裡，他們必懇切地尋求我。」

耶羅波安在以法蓮山區修建示劍城，住在那裡。他後來又去修建毗努伊勒。

以色列人聽說耶羅波安回來了，就請他到會眾面前，擁立他做以色列人的王。只有猶大支派仍然效忠大衛家。
