從非利士營中出來了一個挑戰的人、名叫歌利亞，是迦特人，身高六肘零一虎口。他頭戴銅盔，身穿鎧甲；那甲的銅重五千舍客勒。他腿上有銅護膝，他兩肩之中背着銅短槍。他的矛杆如同織布的機軸，他矛頭的鐵重六百舍客勒；有一個拿大盾牌的人在他前面走。歌利亞對着以色列的陣地站着，向他們喊叫說：『你們出來擺陣作甚麼？我豈不是非利士人？而你們不是掃羅的僕人麼？從你們中間揀選一個人，叫他下到我這裏來吧。他若能跟我交戰，擊殺了我，我們就做你們的奴隸；但我若勝過他，擊殺了他，那麼你們就該做我們的奴隸、來服事我們了。』那非利士人說：『我今天向以色列人罵陣；你們請派一個人到我這裏來，我們可以戰一戰。』掃羅和以色列眾人聽見非利士人這些話，就驚慌，非常害怕。
