The king summoned the Gibeonites and spoke to them.( Now the Gibeonites were not a part of Israel but were survivors of the Amorites; the Israelites had sworn to spare them, but Saul in his zeal for Israel and Judah had tried to annihilate them.)

The people of Gibeon weren’t a part of Israel. Instead, they were some of the Amorites who were still left alive. The Israelites had promised to spare them. But Saul had tried to put an end to them. That’s because he wanted to make Israel and Judah strong. So now King David sent for the people of Gibeon and spoke to them.

So the king called the Gibeonites and spoke to them. Now the Gibeonites were not of the people of Israel but of the remnant of the Amorites. Although the people of Israel had sworn to spare them, Saul had sought to strike them down in his zeal for the people of Israel and Judah.

基遍的居民聽見約書亞向耶利哥和艾城所做的事，就設詭計，假扮使者出去。他們拿舊布袋和破裂補過的舊皮酒袋馱在驢上，將補過的舊鞋穿在腳上，把舊衣服穿在身上，作食物的餅都又乾又長了霉。他們到吉甲營中約書亞那裏，對他和以色列人說：「我們是從遠地來的，現在求你與我們立約。」以色列人對希未人說：「或許你是住在我附近的。若是這樣，我怎能和你立約呢？」他們對約書亞說：「我們是你的僕人。」約書亞對他們說：「你們是甚麼人？是從哪裏來的？」他們對他說：「你的僕人是因耶和華－你上帝的名從極遠之地來的。我們聽見他的名聲，他在埃及所做的一切，以及他向約旦河東的兩個亞摩利王，希實本王西宏和在亞斯她錄的巴珊王噩所做的一切。我們的長老和我們當地所有的居民對我們說：『你們手裏要帶着路上用的乾糧去迎接以色列人，對他們說：我們是你們的僕人。現在求你們與我們立約。』我們出來要往你們這裏來的那日，這從我們家裏帶出來的餅是熱的；看哪，現在這餅又乾又長了霉。這些皮酒袋，我們盛酒的時候還是新的；看哪，現在已經破裂了。我們這些衣服和鞋，因為路途非常遙遠，也都穿舊了。」以色列人收下他們的一些食物，但是沒有求問耶和華的指示。於是約書亞與他們建立和好關係，與他們立約，讓他們存活；會眾的領袖也向他們起誓。以色列人與他們立約之後，過了三天才聽說他們是近鄰，住在附近。以色列人起行，第三天就到了他們的城鎮，他們的城鎮是基遍、基非拉、比錄和基列‧耶琳。因為會眾的領袖已經指着耶和華－以色列的上帝向他們起誓，所以以色列人不擊殺他們。全會眾就向領袖發怨言。眾領袖對全會眾說：「我們已經指着耶和華－以色列的上帝向他們起誓，現在我們不能碰他們。我們要這樣對待他們，讓他們存活，免得因我們向他們所起的誓而憤怒臨到我們。」領袖對會眾說：「讓他們活着吧。」於是他們照領袖所說的，為全會眾作劈柴挑水的人。

那些熱心待你們的人，不懷好意，是要隔絕你們，好使你們熱心待他們。

人要把你們趕出會堂，而且時候將到，凡殺你們的還以為是在事奉上帝。

耶戶說：「你和我同去，看我為耶和華怎樣熱心。」於是他們請他坐在車上。

你要吞滅耶和華－你的上帝交給你的各民族，你的眼目不可顧惜他們。你也不可事奉他們的神明，因為這必成為你的圈套。

掃羅說：「約拿單哪，你一定要死！若不然，願上帝重重懲罰我。」

他的門徒雅各和約翰看見了，就說：「主啊！你要我們吩咐火從天上降下來，燒滅他們嗎？」耶穌轉身責備兩個門徒。

生擒了亞瑪力王亞甲，用刀殺盡亞瑪力的眾百姓。掃羅和百姓卻憐惜亞甲，愛惜上好的牛、羊、牛犢、羔羊，以及一切美物，不肯滅絕。但是凡看不上眼和沒有價值的，他們盡都殺了。

只是耶戶不盡心遵守耶和華－以色列上帝的律法，不離開耶羅波安使以色列人陷入罪裏的那罪。

我為他們作證，他們對上帝有熱心，但不是按着真知識。
