Now when Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into an inner chamber, as if to speak with him privately. And there, to avenge the blood of his brother Asahel, Joab stabbed him in the stomach, and he died.

Joab said to Amasa,“ How are you, my brother?” Then Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him.Amasa was not on his guard against the dagger in Joab’s hand, and Joab plunged it into his belly, and his intestines spilled out on the ground. Without being stabbed again, Amasa died. Then Joab and his brother Abishai pursued Sheba son of Bikri. (niv)

The Lord will repay him for the blood he shed, because without my father David knowing it he attacked two men and killed them with the sword. Both of them— Abner son of Ner, commander of Israel’s army, and Amasa son of Jether, commander of Judah’s army— were better men and more upright than he. (niv)

Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the ten men who were with him got up and struck down Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword, killing the one whom the king of Babylon had appointed as governor over the land. (niv)

Ishmael son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, weeping as he went. When he met them, he said,“ Come to Gedaliah son of Ahikam.”When they went into the city, Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the men who were with him slaughtered them and threw them into a cistern. (niv)

He chased Abner, turning neither to the right nor to the left as he pursued him.Abner looked behind him and asked,“ Is that you, Asahel?”“ It is,” he answered.Then Abner said to him,“ Turn aside to the right or to the left; take on one of the young men and strip him of his weapons.” But Asahel would not stop chasing him.Again Abner warned Asahel,“ Stop chasing me! Why should I strike you down? How could I look your brother Joab in the face?”But Asahel refused to give up the pursuit; so Abner thrust the butt of his spear into Asahel’s stomach, and the spear came out through his back. He fell there and died on the spot. And every man stopped when he came to the place where Asahel had fallen and died. (niv)
