So the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, Armoni and Mephibosheth whom she had borne to Saul, and the five sons of Merab the daughter of Saul, whom she had borne to Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite.Then he handed them over to the Gibeonites, and they hanged them on the mountain before the Lord, so that the seven of them fell together; and they were put to death in the first days of harvest at the beginning of barley harvest.And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth and spread it out for herself on the rock, from the beginning of harvest until it rained on them from the sky; and she allowed neither the birds of the sky to rest on them by day nor the wild animals by night.When it was reported to David what Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, the concubine of Saul, had done,

Ahithophel said to Absalom,“ Have relations with your father’s concubines, whom he has left behind to take care of the house; then all Israel will hear that you have made yourself repulsive to your father. The hands of all who are with you will also be strengthened.”So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof, and Absalom had relations with his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel.

So she said,“ Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah your brother as a wife.”But King Solomon answered and said to his mother,“ And why are you requesting Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? Request for him the kingdom as well— since he is my older brother— for him, for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah!”

I also gave you your master’s house and put your master’s wives into your care, and I gave you the house of Israel and Judah; and if that had been too little, I would have added to you many more things like these!

Then he said,“ Please speak to Solomon the king— for he will not refuse you— that he may give me Abishag the Shunammite as a wife.”
