非利士人与以色列人争战，以色列人从非利士人面前逃跑，被杀的人倒在基利波山上。非利士人追上扫罗和他的儿子们，杀死了扫罗的儿子约拿单、亚比拿达和麦基舒亚。扫罗遭到猛烈的攻击，弓箭手射中了他，他受到射手的重创。扫罗对替他拿兵器的说：“拔出你的刀来，把我刺死！免得这些未受割礼的人来刺死我，折辱我。”但拿兵器的不肯，因为他极其害怕。于是扫罗拿起刀，伏在刀上。替他拿兵器的看见扫罗死了，也伏在自己的刀上，随扫罗一起死了。这样，扫罗和他三个儿子，以及替他拿兵器的人，还有他所有的部下，都在那天一同死了。那些在平原对面和约旦河对岸的以色列人，看到以色列人逃跑，并且扫罗和他儿子们死了，他们就弃城逃跑。于是非利士人来住在其中。第二天，非利士人来剥去被杀之人的衣物，发现扫罗和他三个儿子倒在基利波山上。他们就砍下扫罗的头，剥去他的装备，然后派人到非利士全地的四境，在他们偶像的庙宇，在民间传扬这好消息。他们把扫罗的装备放在亚斯她录的庙宇里，把他的尸体钉在伯珊的城墙上。
