Then they said to him,“ What shall we do to you that the sea may be calm for us?”— for the sea was growing more tempestuous.And he said to them,“ Pick me up and throw me into the sea; then the sea will become calm for you. For I know that this great tempest is because of me.”Nevertheless the men rowed hard to return to land, but they could not, for the sea continued to grow more tempestuous against them.Therefore they cried out to the Lord and said,“ We pray, O Lord, please do not let us perish for this man’s life, and do not charge us with innocent blood; for You, O Lord, have done as it pleased You.”

Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep;

Then He said to me,“ Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They indeed say,‘ Our bones are dry, our hope is lost, and we ourselves are cut off!’

You are wearied in the length of your way; Yet you did not say,‘ There is no hope.’ You have found the life of your hand; Therefore you were not grieved.

But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope.

Withhold your foot from being unshod, and your throat from thirst. But you said,‘ There is no hope. No! For I have loved aliens, and after them I will go.’

Then the Lord said to Moses,“ Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, darkness which may even be felt.”So Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days.They did not see one another; nor did anyone rise from his place for three days. But all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.

But the Lord sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship was about to be broken up.

For He commands and raises the stormy wind, Which lifts up the waves of the sea.They mount up to the heavens, They go down again to the depths; Their soul melts because of trouble.They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, And are at their wits’ end.

He sent darkness, and made it dark; And they did not rebel against His word.
