In those days you were living apart from Christ. You were excluded from citizenship among the people of Israel, and you did not know the covenant promises God had made to them. You lived in this world without God and without hope.

“ Immediately after the anguish of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will give no light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.

And since the storm was getting worse all the time, they asked him,“ What should we do to you to stop this storm?”“ Throw me into the sea,” Jonah said,“ and it will become calm again. I know that this terrible storm is all my fault.”Instead, the sailors rowed even harder to get the ship to the land. But the stormy sea was too violent for them, and they couldn’t make it.Then they cried out to the Lord, Jonah’s God.“ O Lord,” they pleaded,“ don’t make us die for this man’s sin. And don’t hold us responsible for his death. O Lord, you have sent this storm upon him for your own good reasons.”

Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked. Once I spent a whole night and a day adrift at sea.

Then he said to me,“ Son of man, these bones represent the people of Israel. They are saying,‘ We have become old, dry bones— all hope is gone. Our nation is finished.’

You grew weary in your search, but you never gave up. Desire gave you renewed strength, and you did not grow weary.

And now, dear brothers and sisters, we want you to know what will happen to the believers who have died so you will not grieve like people who have no hope.

When will you stop running? When will you stop panting after other gods? But you say,‘ Save your breath. I’m in love with these foreign gods, and I can’t stop loving them now!’

Then the Lord said to Moses,“ Lift your hand toward heaven, and the land of Egypt will be covered with a darkness so thick you can feel it.”So Moses lifted his hand to the sky, and a deep darkness covered the entire land of Egypt for three days.During all that time the people could not see each other, and no one moved. But there was light as usual where the people of Israel lived.

But the Lord hurled a powerful wind over the sea, causing a violent storm that threatened to break the ship apart.

He spoke, and the winds rose, stirring up the waves.Their ships were tossed to the heavens and plunged again to the depths; the sailors cringed in terror.They reeled and staggered like drunkards and were at their wits’ end.

The Lord blanketed Egypt in darkness, for they had defied his commands to let his people go.
