buying the poor with silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, selling even the sweepings with the wheat.

You buy poor people to make slaves out of them. You buy those who are in need for a mere pair of sandals. You even sell the worthless parts of your wheat.

And you mix the grain you sell with chaff swept from the floor. Then you enslave poor people for one piece of silver or a pair of sandals.

“‘ If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and sell themselves to you, do not make them work as slaves.They are to be treated as hired workers or temporary residents among you; they are to work for you until the Year of Jubilee.Then they and their children are to be released, and they will go back to their own clans and to the property of their ancestors.Because the Israelites are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt, they must not be sold as slaves. Now the men and their wives raised a great outcry against their fellow Jews.Some were saying,“ We and our sons and daughters are numerous; in order for us to eat and stay alive, we must get grain.”Others were saying,“ We are mortgaging our fields, our vineyards and our homes to get grain during the famine.”Still others were saying,“ We have had to borrow money to pay the king’s tax on our fields and vineyards.Although we are of the same flesh and blood as our fellow Jews and though our children are as good as theirs, yet we have to subject our sons and daughters to slavery. Some of our daughters have already been enslaved, but we are powerless, because our fields and our vineyards belong to others.” (niv)

They cast lots for my people and traded boys for prostitutes; they sold girls for wine to drink. (niv)
