王向他们寻问各样有关智慧和悟性的事，发现他们胜过全国所有的术士和占卜者十倍。

因此我发出命令，要把巴比伦的所有智慧人带到我面前，好让他们把梦的释义显明给我。

到了早晨，法老灵里烦乱，就派人召来了埃及所有的术士和智慧人。法老向他们讲述了他的梦，但没有人能为法老解梦。

王大声高呼，要人把占卜者、迦勒底人和算命者带来。王开口对巴比伦的智慧人说：“任何人读出这文字，并把它的释义讲明给我，他就必身穿紫袍，项戴金链，在国中掌权，位居第三。”

那些迦勒底人在王面前回应说：“地上没有人能讲明王所要求的事；事实上，没有任何一个伟大、有权势的君王，向任何一个术士、占卜者或迦勒底人问过这样的事。

坚持施行你的符咒和众多法术吧！那些都是你从年轻时辛劳所得的，或许你能得益处，或许还能让人恐惧呢！你因谋划过多而筋疲力尽；现在就让那些划分天象、观看星辰、在新月时说预言的都站出来吧，拯救你脱离那些将要临到你的事！

尽管有人对你们说：“求问那些喃喃自语、念念有词的招魂者和通灵者吧”，但百姓难道不应当求问自己的神吗？难道应当为活人求问死人吗？

埃及人必失魂落魄；我要使他们的计划混乱。他们必求问偶像、阴魂、招魂的和通灵的；
