Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night without eating and without any entertainment being brought to him. And he could not sleep.

那天夜裡，王睡不著覺，就吩咐人把《編年史》的記錄帶來，在王面前誦讀；

尼布甲尼撒在位第二年，尼布甲尼撒做夢，靈裡煩亂，睡不著覺。

你使我不能合眼；我煩亂不安，甚至不能說話。

大衛為孩子向神祈求，並且禁食，進了房躺在地上過夜。他家中的老臣來站在他旁邊，要扶他從地上起來，他卻不肯，也不與他們一起吃飯。

我又為自己積聚金銀，還有來自君王們和各省的珍寶。我也為自己招納了男女歌手，以及許多的妃嬪，都是世人引以為樂的。

在那裡的柳樹林中，我們掛起我們的豎琴；

彈琴的、奏樂的、吹笛的、吹號之人的聲音，在你中間絕不會再聽到了！各種手藝的工匠，在你中間絕不會再找到了！磨石的聲音，在你中間絕不會再聽到了！

歡快的鼓聲止息，歡騰者的喧嚷停止，歡快的琴聲也止息了。他們不再喝酒唱歌；烈酒對飲者也變得苦澀。

約拿照著耶和華的話就起身，到尼尼微去。尼尼微是一座超級大城，走遍它需要三天的路程。約拿開始進入那城，走了一天的路程，宣告說：「再過四十天，尼尼微就要覆滅了。」尼尼微人就相信神，並宣告禁食，無論尊貴的或卑微的，都披上麻布。這話語傳到尼尼微王的時候，他從自己的寶座上起來，從身上脫下王袍，披上麻布，坐在灰燼中。然後他頒布諭令，說：「在尼尼微，王和大臣有令：『無論人或牲畜，牛或羊，都不可嘗什麼，不可吃什麼，也不可喝水。人和牲畜都當披上麻布；各人都當迫切地向神呼求，從自己邪惡的道路上、自己手裡的殘暴中轉回。或許神會轉回、施憐憫，從他猛烈的怒氣中轉回，使我們不致滅亡。』」

掃羅的孫子米非波設也下去迎接王；自從王走的那天起，直到王平安回來這天，他沒有修腳，沒有修剪鬍子，也沒有洗衣服。
