his brother’s widow shall go up to him in the presence of the elders, take off one of his sandals, spit in his face and say,“ This is what is done to the man who will not build up his brother’s family line.”

( Now this used to be the customary way to finalize a transaction involving redemption in Israel: A man would remove his sandal and give it to the other party. This was a legally binding act in Israel.)So the guardian said to Boaz,“ You may acquire it,” and he removed his sandal.

The LORD said to Moses,“ If her father had only spit in her face, would she not have been disgraced for seven days? Shut her out from the camp seven days, and afterward she can be brought back in again.”

I offered my back to those who attacked, my jaws to those who tore out my beard; I did not hide my face from insults and spitting.

At that time the LORD announced through Isaiah son of Amoz:“ Go, remove the sackcloth from your waist and take your sandals off your feet.” He did as instructed and walked around in undergarments and barefoot.

He proclaimed,“ One more powerful than I am is coming after me; I am not worthy to bend down and untie the strap of his sandals.

Then Judah said to Onan,“ Have sexual relations with your brother’s wife and fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law to her so that you may raise up a descendant for your brother.”But Onan knew that the child would not be considered his. So whenever he had sexual relations with his brother’s wife, he withdrew prematurely so as not to give his brother a descendant.What he did was evil in the LORD’s sight, so the LORD killed him too.

They spat on him and took the staff and struck him repeatedly on the head.

Then they spat in his face and struck him with their fists. And some slapped him,

who is coming after me. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandal!”
