But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus. (niv)

He said to them,“ Listen, men of Benjamin! Will the son of Jesse give all of you fields and vineyards? Will he make all of you commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds?Is that why you have all conspired against me? No one tells me when my son makes a covenant with the son of Jesse. Opposition arose, however, from members of the Synagogue of the Freedmen( as it was called)— Jews of Cyrene and Alexandria as well as the provinces of Cilicia and Asia— who began to argue with Stephen.But they could not stand up against the wisdom the Spirit gave him as he spoke.Then they secretly persuaded some men to say,“ We have heard Stephen speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God.” (niv)

Some of the Pharisees asked,“ Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?” (niv)

But the Pharisee was surprised when he noticed that Jesus did not first wash before the meal. (niv)

Saul said nothing that day, for he thought,“ Something must have happened to David to make him ceremonially unclean— surely he is unclean.”But the next day, the second day of the month, David’s place was empty again. If I have found favor in your eyes, let me get away to see my brothers.’ That is why he has not come to the king’s table.”Saul’s anger flared up at Jonathan and he said to him,“ You son of a perverse and rebellious woman! Don’t I know that you have sided with the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of the mother who bore you?As long as the son of Jesse lives on this earth, neither you nor your kingdom will be established. Now send someone to bring him to me, for he must die!”“ Why should he be put to death? What has he done?” Jonathan asked his father.But Saul hurled his spear at him to kill him. Then Jonathan knew that his father intended to kill David. (niv)

On the fourth day, they said to Samson’s wife,“ Coax your husband into explaining the riddle for us, or we will burn you and your father’s household to death. Did you invite us here to steal our property?” (niv)

He said,“ May God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if the head of Elisha son of Shaphat remains on his shoulders today!” (niv)

A silversmith named Demetrius, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought in a lot of business for the craftsmen there.He called them together, along with the workers in related trades, and said:“ You know, my friends, that we receive a good income from this business.And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus and in practically the whole province of Asia. He says that gods made by human hands are no gods at all.There is danger not only that our trade will lose its good name, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited; and the goddess herself, who is worshiped throughout the province of Asia and the world, will be robbed of her divine majesty.”When they heard this, they were furious and began shouting:“ Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” (niv)

When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him.But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.“ Look,” he said,“ I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him,dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul.While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed,“ Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” (niv)
