To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life— this is indeed a gift from God.God keeps such people so busy enjoying life that they take no time to brood over the past.

It is a land as dark as midnight, a land of gloom and confusion, where even the light is dark as midnight.’”

Endless crowds stand around him, but then another generation grows up and rejects him, too. So it is all meaningless— like chasing the wind.

God gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy to those who please him. But if a sinner becomes wealthy, God takes the wealth away and gives it to those who please him. This, too, is meaningless— like chasing the wind.

Then the king said to his aides,‘ Bind his hands and feet and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

They will be thrust from light into darkness, driven from the world.

But even though a person sins a hundred times and still lives a long time, I know that those who fear God will be better off.

We all come to the end of our lives as naked and empty handed as on the day we were born. We can’t take our riches with us.And this, too, is a very serious problem. People leave this world no better off than when they came. All their hard work is for nothing— like working for the wind.

Enjoy prosperity while you can, but when hard times strike, realize that both come from God. Remember that nothing is certain in this life.

“ But when people die, their strength is gone. They breathe their last, and then where are they?

And who can tell whether my successors will be wise or foolish? Yet they will control everything I have gained by my skill and hard work under the sun. How meaningless!

Some people work wisely with knowledge and skill, then must leave the fruit of their efforts to someone who hasn’t worked for it. This, too, is meaningless, a great tragedy.So what do people get in this life for all their hard work and anxiety?Their days of labor are filled with pain and grief; even at night their minds cannot rest. It is all meaningless.

This is the case of a man who is all alone, without a child or a brother, yet who works hard to gain as much wealth as he can. But then he asks himself,“ Who am I working for? Why am I giving up so much pleasure now?” It is all so meaningless and depressing.

The more words you speak, the less they mean. So what good are they?

I said to myself,“ Come on, let’s try pleasure. Let’s look for the‘ good things’ in life.” But I found that this, too, was meaningless.So I said,“ Laughter is silly. What good does it do to seek pleasure?”After much thought, I decided to cheer myself with wine. And while still seeking wisdom, I clutched at foolishness. In this way, I tried to experience the only happiness most people find during their brief life in this world.I also tried to find meaning by building huge homes for myself and by planting beautiful vineyards.I made gardens and parks, filling them with all kinds of fruit trees.I built reservoirs to collect the water to irrigate my many flourishing groves.I bought slaves, both men and women, and others were born into my household. I also owned large herds and flocks, more than any of the kings who had lived in Jerusalem before me.I collected great sums of silver and gold, the treasure of many kings and provinces. I hired wonderful singers, both men and women, and had many beautiful concubines. I had everything a man could desire!So I became greater than all who had lived in Jerusalem before me, and my wisdom never failed me.Anything I wanted, I would take. I denied myself no pleasure. I even found great pleasure in hard work, a reward for all my labors.But as I looked at everything I had worked so hard to accomplish, it was all so meaningless— like chasing the wind. There was nothing really worthwhile anywhere.

Give glory to the Lord your God before it is too late. Acknowledge him before he brings darkness upon you, causing you to stumble and fall on the darkening mountains. For then, when you look for light, you will find only terrible darkness and gloom.

They wander around, saying,‘ Where can I find bread?’ They know their day of destruction is near.

Jesus replied,“ My light will shine for you just a little longer. Walk in the light while you can, so the darkness will not overtake you. Those who walk in the darkness cannot see where they are going.

It is a day of darkness and gloom, a day of thick clouds and deep blackness. Suddenly, like dawn spreading across the mountains, a great and mighty army appears. Nothing like it has been seen before or will ever be seen again.

Don’t let the excitement of youth cause you to forget your Creator. Honor him in your youth before you grow old and say,“ Life is not pleasant anymore.”Remember him before the light of the sun, moon, and stars is dim to your old eyes, and rain clouds continually darken your sky.Remember him before your legs— the guards of your house— start to tremble; and before your shoulders— the strong men— stoop. Remember him before your teeth— your few remaining servants— stop grinding; and before your eyes— the women looking through the windows— see dimly.Remember him before the door to life’s opportunities is closed and the sound of work fades. Now you rise at the first chirping of the birds, but then all their sounds will grow faint.Remember him before you become fearful of falling and worry about danger in the streets; before your hair turns white like an almond tree in bloom, and you drag along without energy like a dying grasshopper, and the caperberry no longer inspires sexual desire. Remember him before you near the grave, your everlasting home, when the mourners will weep at your funeral.

So I concluded there is nothing better than to be happy and enjoy ourselves as long as we can.And people should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of their labor, for these are gifts from God.

They told you that in the last times there would be scoffers whose purpose in life is to satisfy their ungodly desires.

So I came to hate life because everything done here under the sun is so troubling. Everything is meaningless— like chasing the wind.

Both will die. So I said to myself,“ Since I will end up the same as the fool, what’s the value of all my wisdom? This is all so meaningless!”

He might live a thousand years twice over but still not find contentment. And since he must die like everyone else— well, what’s the use?

So I recommend having fun, because there is nothing better for people in this world than to eat, drink, and enjoy life. That way they will experience some happiness along with all the hard work God gives them under the sun.
