Our lives last seventy years or, if we are strong, eighty years. Even the best of them are struggle and sorrow; indeed, they pass quickly and we fly away.

I’m now eighty years old. Can I discern what is pleasant and what is not? Can your servant taste what he eats or drinks? Can I still hear the voice of male and female singers? Why should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king?

The LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, serving in the household of his Egyptian master.

Samuel grew. The LORD was with him, and he fulfilled everything Samuel prophesied.All Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba knew that Samuel was a confirmed prophet of the LORD.The LORD continued to appear in Shiloh, because there he revealed himself to Samuel by his word.

But he refused.“ Look,” he said to his master’s wife,“ with me here my master does not concern himself with anything in his house, and he has put all that he owns under my authority.No one in this house is greater than I am. By contrast, the boy Samuel grew in stature and in favor with the LORD and with people.

Samuel served in the LORD’s presence— this mere boy was dressed in the linen ephod.

The warden did not bother with anything under Joseph’s authority, because the LORD was with him, and the LORD made everything that he did successful.

The boy grew up and became strong, filled with wisdom, and God’s grace was on him.Every year his parents traveled to Jerusalem for the Passover Festival.When he was twelve years old, they went up according to the custom of the festival.After those days were over, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it.Assuming he was in the traveling party, they went a day’s journey. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends.When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him.After three days, they found him in the temple sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.And all those who heard him were astounded at his understanding and his answers.When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him,“ Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”“ Why were you searching for me?” he asked them.“ Didn’t you know that it was necessary for me to be in my Father’s house?”But they did not understand what he said to them.Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was obedient to them. His mother kept all these things in her heart.And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and with people.

I now give the boy to the LORD. For as long as he lives, he is given to the LORD.” Then he worshiped the LORD there.

He did what was right in the LORD’s sight and walked in the ways of his ancestor David; he did not turn aside to the right or the left.In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still a youth, Josiah began to seek the God of his ancestor David, and in the twelfth year he began to cleanse Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the Asherah poles, the carved images, and the cast images.

God gave these four young men knowledge and understanding in every kind of literature and wisdom. Daniel also understood visions and dreams of every kind.

What use to me was the strength of their hands? Their vigor had left them.

Fathers, don’t stir up anger in your children, but bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

Your servant has killed lions and bears; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God.”Then David said,“ The LORD who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” Saul said to David,“ Go, and may the LORD be with you.”

All Israel will mourn for him and bury him. He alone out of Jeroboam’s house will be given a proper burial because out of the house of Jeroboam something favorable to the LORD God of Israel was found in him.

Daniel determined that he would not defile himself with the king’s food or with the wine he drank. So he asked permission from the chief eunuch not to defile himself.God had granted Daniel kindness and compassion from the chief eunuch,

And Solomon replied,“ You have shown great and faithful love to your servant, my father David, because he walked before you in faithfulness, righteousness, and integrity. You have continued this great and faithful love for him by giving him a son to sit on his throne, as it is today.“ LORD my God, you have now made your servant king in my father David’s place. Yet I am just a youth with no experience in leadership.Your servant is among your people you have chosen, a people too many to be numbered or counted.So give your servant a receptive heart to judge your people and to discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of yours?”Now it pleased the Lord that Solomon had requested this.So God said to him,“ Because you have requested this and did not ask for long life or riches for yourself, or the death of your enemies, but you asked discernment for yourself to administer justice,I will therefore do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has never been anyone like you before and never will be again.

For he will be great in the sight of the Lord and will never drink wine or beer. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit while still in his mother’s womb.

Yes, LORD, we wait for you in the path of your judgments. Our desire is for your name and renown.

But when I leave you, the Spirit of the LORD may carry you off to some place I don’t know. Then when I go report to Ahab and he doesn’t find you, he will kill me. But I, your servant, have feared the LORD from my youth.

Foreigners consume his strength, but he does not notice. Even his hair is streaked with gray, but he does not notice.
