And I will say to my soul,“ Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’But God said to him,‘ Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’

one person who has no other, either son or brother, yet there is no end to all his toil, and his eyes are never satisfied with riches, so that he never asks,“ For whom am I toiling and depriving myself of pleasure?” This also is vanity and an unhappy business.

God answered Solomon,“ Because this was in your heart, and you have not asked for possessions, wealth, honor, or the life of those who hate you, and have not even asked for long life, but have asked for wisdom and knowledge for yourself that you may govern my people over whom I have made you king,

A nation that you have not known shall eat up the fruit of your ground and of all your labors, and you shall be only oppressed and crushed continually,

This also is a grievous evil: just as he came, so shall he go, and what gain is there to him who toils for the wind?

Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our homes to foreigners.

Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a man’s envy of his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

O king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father kingship and greatness and glory and majesty.

The sojourner who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower.

As soon as you go, you will come to an unsuspecting people. The land is spacious, for God has given it into your hands, a place where there is no lack of anything that is in the earth.”

Then he died at a good age, full of days, riches, and honor. And Solomon his son reigned in his place.

Strangers devour his strength, and he knows it not; gray hairs are sprinkled upon him, and he knows it not.

I made great works. I built houses and planted vineyards for myself.I made myself gardens and parks, and planted in them all kinds of fruit trees.I made myself pools from which to water the forest of growing trees.I bought male and female slaves, and had slaves who were born in my house. I had also great possessions of herds and flocks, more than any who had been before me in Jerusalem.I also gathered for myself silver and gold and the treasure of kings and provinces. I got singers, both men and women, and many concubines, the delight of the sons of man.So I became great and surpassed all who were before me in Jerusalem. Also my wisdom remained with me.And whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I kept my heart from no pleasure, for my heart found pleasure in all my toil, and this was my reward for all my toil.

For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing out in the valleys and hills,a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey,a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, in which you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper.And you shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the Lord your God for the good land he has given you.

Surely a man goes about as a shadow! Surely for nothing they are in turmoil; man heaps up wealth and does not know who will gather!

And the Lord made Solomon very great in the sight of all Israel and bestowed on him such royal majesty as had not been on any king before him in Israel.
