There is something else meaningless that occurs on earth: the righteous who get what the wicked deserve, and the wicked who get what the righteous deserve. This too, I say, is meaningless.

Here’s something else on this earth that doesn’t have any meaning. Sometimes godly people get what sinful people should receive. And sinful people get what godly people should receive. Here’s what I’m telling you. That doesn’t have any meaning either.

There is a vanity that takes place on earth, that there are righteous people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked, and there are wicked people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity.

And this is not all that is meaningless in our world. In this life, good people are often treated as though they were wicked, and wicked people are often treated as though they were good. This is so meaningless!

There is a futility that is done on the earth: there are righteous people who get what the actions of the wicked deserve, and there are wicked people who get what the actions of the righteous deserve. I say that this too is futile.

So I reflected on all this and concluded that the righteous and the wise and what they do are in God’s hands, but no one knows whether love or hate awaits them.All share a common destiny— the righteous and the wicked, the good and the bad, the clean and the unclean, those who offer sacrifices and those who do not. As it is with the good, so with the sinful; as it is with those who take oaths, so with those who are afraid to take them.This is the evil in everything that happens under the sun: The same destiny overtakes all. The hearts of people, moreover, are full of evil and there is madness in their hearts while they live, and afterward they join the dead. (niv)

This is what the wicked are like— always free of care, they go on amassing wealth.Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence.All day long I have been afflicted, and every morning brings new punishments. (niv)

Who repays them for what they have done?They are carried to the grave, and watch is kept over their tombs.The soil in the valley is sweet to them; everyone follows after them, and a countless throng goes before them.“ So how can you console me with your nonsense? Nothing is left of your answers but falsehood!” (niv)

They prey on the barren and childless woman, and to the widow they show no kindness.But God drags away the mighty by his power; though they become established, they have no assurance of life.He may let them rest in a feeling of security, but his eyes are on their ways.For a little while they are exalted, and then they are gone; they are brought low and gathered up like all others; they are cut off like heads of grain.“ If this is not so, who can prove me false and reduce my words to nothing?” (niv)

There is an evil I have seen under the sun, the sort of error that arises from a ruler: (niv)

You are always righteous, Lord, when I bring a case before you. Yet I would speak with you about your justice: Why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why do all the faithless live at ease? (niv)

And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind. (niv)

It is all the same; that is why I say,‘ He destroys both the blameless and the wicked.’When a scourge brings sudden death, he mocks the despair of the innocent.When a land falls into the hands of the wicked, he blindfolds its judges. If it is not he, then who is it? (niv)
