While applying my mind to everything that happens in this world, I have seen all this: Sometimes one person dominates other people to their harm.

此皆我所見者、專心詳察日下所作諸事、見操權者、有時使人受害、

我詳觀天下事、見有陷害同儔者、

凡此我嘗見之、我專心詳觀日下所作之事、有時人轄人、致人受害、有時人轄人致人受害或作有時人轄人致自受害

All this I saw, as I applied my mind to everything done under the sun. There is a time when a man lords it over others to his own hurt.

I understood all these things. I used my mind to study everything that’s done on earth. A man sometimes makes life hard for others. But he ends up hurting himself.

All this I observed while applying my heart to all that is done under the sun, when man had power over man to his hurt.

I have thought deeply about all that goes on here under the sun, where people have the power to hurt each other.

All this I have seen, applying my mind to all the work that is done under the sun, at a time when one person has authority over another to his harm.

All this I have seen, and have applied my mind to every deed that has been done under the sun at a time when one person has exercised authority over another person to his detriment.

All this I have seen, and applied my heart to every work that is done under the sun: There is a time in which one man rules over another to his own hurt.

If you see the extortion of the poor, or the perversion of justice and fairness in the government, do not be astonished by the matter. For the high official is watched by a higher official, and there are higher ones over them!

Here is a misfortune on earth that I have seen: Wealth hoarded by its owner to his own misery.

So I again considered another futile thing on earth:A man who is all alone with no companion, he has no children nor siblings; yet there is no end to all his toil, and he is never satisfied with riches. He laments,“ For whom am I toiling and depriving myself of pleasure?” This also is futile and a burdensome task!

When it was reported to the king of Egypt that the people had fled, the heart of Pharaoh and his servants was turned against the people, and the king and his servants said,“ What in the world have we done? For we have released the people of Israel from serving us!”Then he prepared his chariots and took his army with him.He took six hundred select chariots, and all the rest of the chariots of Egypt, and officers on all of them.But the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he chased after the Israelites. Now the Israelites were going out defiantly.The Egyptians chased after them, and all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh and his horsemen and his army overtook them camping by the sea, beside Pi-hahiroth, before Baal-Zephon.

I reflected on everything that is accomplished by man on earth, and I concluded: Everything he has accomplished is futile– like chasing the wind!

But King Sihon of Heshbon was unwilling to allow us to pass near him because the LORD our God had made him obstinate and stubborn so that he might deliver him over to you this very day.

You thoroughly defeated Edom and it has gone to your head! Gloat over your success, but stay in your palace. Why bring calamity on yourself? He and King Amaziah of Judah met face to face in Beth Shemesh of Judah.Judah was defeated by Israel, and each man ran back home.

The water returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen and all the army of Pharaoh that was coming after the Israelites into the sea– not so much as one of them survived!

Zedekiah’s sons were executed while Zedekiah was forced to watch. The king of Babylon then had Zedekiah’s eyes put out, bound him in bronze chains, and carried him off to Babylon.

I have observed the burden that God has given to people to keep them occupied.

I tried to understand, examine, and comprehend the role of wisdom in the scheme of things, and to understand the stupidity of wickedness and the insanity of folly.
