一时之间，这么大的财富竟荡然无存！’“所有船长、旅客、水手，以及凡是靠海谋生的，都远远地站着。他们看见了焚烧她的烟，就喊叫说：‘有哪一座城能与这大城相比呢？’他们又把尘土撒在自己头上，痛哭悲哀，喊着说：‘有祸了！有祸了！这大城啊！凡是有船航行海上的，都因这城的财宝发了财；一时之间她竟成了荒场！’

以扫听了他父亲的话，就非常痛心，放声大哭，对他父亲说：“我父啊，求你也给我祝福。”

“哥拉逊啊，你有祸了！伯赛大啊，你有祸了！在你们那里行过的神迹，如果行在推罗和西顿，它们早已披麻蒙灰悔改了。

于是约伯起来，撕裂外袍，剃了头，俯伏在地上敬拜，

约拿进城，走了一天，就宣告说：“再过四十天，尼尼微就要毁灭了。”尼尼微人信了（“信了”或译：“信服”）神，就宣告禁食，从大到小，都穿上麻衣。这事传到尼尼微王那里，他就起来，离开宝座，脱去王袍，披上麻衣，坐在炉灰中。他又传谕全尼尼微，说：“王和大臣有令：‘人、畜、牛、羊，都不准尝什么，不准吃，也不准喝。不论人畜，都要披上麻衣；各人要恳切呼求神，悔改，离开恶行，摒弃手中的强暴。或者神回心转意，不发烈怒，使我们不致灭亡。’”

因此我说：“要转开你们的眼，不要望着我，让我痛哭吧！不要因我人民的毁灭，而急急安慰我。”

为此我要痛哭哀号，赤膊光脚而行；又要哀号如豺狼，悲鸣像鸵鸟。

耶和华的大日子临近了，临近了，来得非常快速。听！耶和华的日子的声音。在那日，勇士要哀痛地号叫。

约书亚就撕裂自己的衣服，和以色列人的长老，在耶和华的约柜前，一同俯伏在地，直到晚上，也把尘土撒在头上。

约伯坐在灰烬中，拿瓦片刮自己。

人子啊！至于你，你要叹息，在他们眼前弯着腰，苦苦叹息。

希实本和以利亚利都呼喊，他们的声音达到雅杂，因此摩押配带武器的人大声呼叫，各人的心都战兢。

巴拿巴和保罗两个使徒听见了，就撕裂衣服，跳进群众中间，喊着说：

王的谕旨和命令传到的各省各地，犹大人都大大悲哀，禁食、哭泣、悲伤；许多人披上麻衣，躺在灰尘中。

因此我厌恶自己，在尘土和灰烬中懊悔。”

哈曼对亚哈随鲁王说：“有一个种族，散居在王国各省各民族之中；他们的法例与各族的法例不同，他们也不遵守王的法规；所以留下他们，对王实在无益。王若是赞成，请王降旨消灭他们；我愿捐出三十四万公斤银子，交在管理国务的人手中，纳入王库。”于是王从自己的手中取下戒指，交给犹大人的敌人，亚甲族哈米大他的儿子哈曼。王对哈曼说：“这银子仍赐给你，这民也交给你，你看怎样好，就怎样待他们吧。”正月十三日，王的书记都召了来，照着哈曼的一切吩咐，用各省的文字，各族的方言，奉亚哈随鲁王的名下旨，又用王的戒指盖上印，颁给总督、各省的省长和各族的领袖。王旨交给众驿使传到王的各省，吩咐要在一日之内，在十二月，就是亚达月十三日，把所有的犹大人，无论老少妇孺，都全部毁灭、杀绝、除尽，并且抢夺他们的财产。

使人刻苦自己的日子，这样的禁食是我拣选的吗？难道只是叫人垂头像一根苇子，用麻布和炉灰铺在下面吗？你可以称这是禁食，为耶和华所悦纳的日子吗？
