一時之間，這麼大的富厚就歸於無有了。凡船主和坐船往各處去的，並眾水手，連所有靠海為業的，都遠遠地站着，看見燒她的煙，就喊着說：「有何城能比這大城呢？」他們又把塵土撒在頭上，哭泣悲哀，喊着說：哀哉！哀哉！這大城啊。凡有船在海中的，都因她的珍寶成了富足！她在一時之間就成了荒場！

以掃聽了他父親的話，就放聲痛哭，說：「我父啊，求你也為我祝福！」

「哥拉汛哪，你有禍了！伯賽大啊，你有禍了！因為在你們中間所行的異能，若行在泰爾、西頓，他們早已披麻蒙灰悔改了。

約伯便起來，撕裂外袍，剃了頭，伏在地上下拜，

約拿進城走了一日，宣告說：「再等四十日，尼尼微必傾覆了！」尼尼微人信服神，便宣告禁食，從最大的到至小的都穿麻衣。這信息傳到尼尼微王的耳中，他就下了寶座，脫下朝服，披上麻布，坐在灰中。他又使人遍告尼尼微通城，說：「王和大臣有令，人不可嘗甚麼，牲畜、牛羊不可吃草，也不可喝水。人與牲畜都當披上麻布；人要切切求告神。各人回頭離開所行的惡道，丟棄手中的強暴。或者神轉意後悔，不發烈怒，使我們不致滅亡，也未可知。」

所以我說：你們轉眼不看我，我要痛哭。不要因我眾民的毀滅，就竭力安慰我。

先知說：因此我必大聲哀號，赤腳露體而行；又要呼號如野狗，哀鳴如鴕鳥。

耶和華的大日臨近，臨近而且甚快，乃是耶和華日子的風聲；勇士必痛痛地哭號。

約書亞便撕裂衣服；他和以色列的長老把灰撒在頭上，在耶和華的約櫃前俯伏在地，直到晚上。

約伯就坐在爐灰中，拿瓦片刮身體。

人子啊，你要歎息，在他們眼前彎着腰，苦苦地歎息。

希實本和以利亞利悲哀的聲音達到雅雜，所以摩押帶兵器的高聲喊嚷，人心戰兢。

巴拿巴、保羅二使徒聽見，就撕開衣裳，跳進眾人中間，喊着說：

王的諭旨所到的各省各處，猶大人大大悲哀，禁食哭泣哀號，穿麻衣躺在灰中的甚多。

因此我厭惡自己，在塵土和爐灰中懊悔。

哈曼對亞哈隨魯王說：「有一種民散居在王國各省的民中；他們的律例與萬民的律例不同，也不守王的律例，所以容留他們與王無益。王若以為美，請下旨意滅絕他們；我就捐一萬他連得銀子交給掌管國帑的人，納入王的府庫。」於是王從自己手上摘下戒指給猶大人的仇敵－亞甲族哈米大他的兒子哈曼。王對哈曼說：「這銀子仍賜給你，這民也交給你，你可以隨意待他們。」正月十三日，就召了王的書記來，照着哈曼一切所吩咐的，用各省的文字、各族的方言，奉亞哈隨魯王的名寫旨意，傳與總督和各省的省長，並各族的首領；又用王的戒指蓋印，交給驛卒傳到王的各省，吩咐將猶大人，無論老少婦女孩子，在一日之間，十二月，就是亞達月十三日，全然剪除，殺戮滅絕，並奪他們的財為掠物。

這樣禁食豈是我所揀選、使人刻苦己心的日子嗎？豈是叫人垂頭像葦子，用麻布和爐灰鋪在他以下嗎？你這可稱為禁食、為耶和華所悅納的日子嗎？
