Mordecai told the Jews to celebrate the time when they got rest from their enemies. That was the month when their sadness was turned into joy. It was when their weeping turned into a day for celebrating. He wrote the letters to celebrate those days as times of joy. He wanted the people to enjoy good food. He told them to give presents of food to one another. He also wanted them to give gifts to people who were poor.

And all that believed were together, and had all things common;And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all[ men], as every man had need.And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,

Blessed[ are] they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for[ this] day[ is] holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, Hold your peace, for the day[ is] holy; neither be ye grieved.And all the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared unto them.

And in that day thou shalt say, O LORD, I will praise thee: though thou wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst me.Behold, God[ is] my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH[ is] my strength and[ my] song; he also is become my salvation.
