耶和華對亞伯蘭說：「你要的確知道，你的後裔必寄居別人的地，又服事那地的人；那地的人要苦待他們四百年。

後來，摩西長大，他出去到他弟兄那裏，看他們的重擔，見一個埃及人打希伯來人的一個弟兄。

神說：我使你的肩得脫重擔，你的手放下筐子。

埃及人惡待我們，苦害我們，將苦工加在我們身上。

所羅門建造曠野裏的達莫，又建造哈馬所有的積貨城，

忿怒為殘忍，怒氣為狂瀾，惟有嫉妒，誰能敵得住呢？

你們安臥在羊圈的時候，好像鴿子的翅膀鍍白銀，翎毛鍍黃金一般。

所以你要對以色列人說：『我是耶和華；我要用伸出來的膀臂重重地刑罰埃及人，救贖你們脫離他們的重擔，不做他們的苦工。我要以你們為我的百姓，我也要作你們的神。你們要知道我是耶和華－你們的神，是救你們脫離埃及人之重擔的。

以色列人的官長就來哀求法老說：「為甚麼這樣待你的僕人？

他們從這邦遊到那邦，從這國行到那國。

就是我們的列祖下到埃及，我們在埃及久住；埃及人惡待我們的列祖和我們，

埃及王對他們說：「摩西、亞倫！你們為甚麼叫百姓曠工呢？你們去擔你們的擔子吧！」又說：「看哪，這地的以色列人如今眾多，你們竟叫他們歇下擔子！」當天，法老吩咐督工的和官長說：

又建造所有的積貨城，並屯車和馬兵的城，與耶路撒冷、黎巴嫩，以及自己治理的全國中所願建造的。
