“ Which ones?” the man asked. And Jesus replied:“‘ You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely.

Those who refuse to gossip or harm their neighbors or speak evil of their friends.

“ You must not pass along false rumors. You must not cooperate with evil people by lying on the witness stand.

I will not tolerate people who slander their neighbors. I will not endure conceit and pride.I will search for faithful people to be my companions. Only those who are above reproach will be allowed to serve me.I will not allow deceivers to serve in my house, and liars will not stay in my presence.

Inside, the leading priests and the entire high council were trying to find witnesses who would lie about Jesus, so they could put him to death.But even though they found many who agreed to give false witness, they could not use anyone’s testimony. Finally, two men came forward

“ Do not spread slanderous gossip among your people.“ Do not stand idly by when your neighbor’s life is threatened. I am the Lord.

Is that why you have conspired against me? For not one of you told me when my own son made a solemn pact with the son of Jesse. You’re not even sorry for me. Think of it! My own son— encouraging him to kill me, as he is trying to do this very day!”Then Doeg the Edomite, who was standing there with Saul’s men, spoke up.“ When I was at Nob,” he said,“ I saw the son of Jesse talking to the priest, Ahimelech son of Ahitub.Ahimelech consulted the Lord for him. Then he gave him food and the sword of Goliath the Philistine.”King Saul immediately sent for Ahimelech and all his family, who served as priests at Nob.When they arrived, Saul shouted at him,“ Listen to me, you son of Ahitub!”“ What is it, my king?” Ahimelech asked.“ Why have you and the son of Jesse conspired against me?” Saul demanded.“ Why did you give him food and a sword? Why have you consulted God for him? Why have you encouraged him to kill me, as he is trying to do this very day?”“ But sir,” Ahimelech replied,“ is anyone among all your servants as faithful as David, your son in law? Why, he is the captain of your bodyguard and a highly honored member of your household!This was certainly not the first time I had consulted God for him! May the king not accuse me and my family in this matter, for I knew nothing at all of any plot against you.”“ You will surely die, Ahimelech, along with your entire family!” the king shouted.And he ordered his bodyguards,“ Kill these priests of the Lord, for they are allies and conspirators with David! They knew he was running away from me, but they didn’t tell me!” But Saul’s men refused to kill the Lord’s priests.Then the king said to Doeg,“ You do it.” So Doeg the Edomite turned on them and killed them that day, eighty five priests in all, still wearing their priestly garments.Then he went to Nob, the town of the priests, and killed the priests’ families— men and women, children and babies— and all the cattle, donkeys, sheep, and goats.

Don’t speak evil against each other, dear brothers and sisters. If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God’s law. But your job is to obey the law, not to judge whether it applies to you.

“ In a lawsuit, you must not deny justice to the poor.“ Be sure never to charge anyone falsely with evil. Never sentence an innocent or blameless person to death, for I never declare a guilty person to be innocent.

Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior.

They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self control. They will be cruel and hate what is good.

“ You must not convict anyone of a crime on the testimony of only one witness. The facts of the case must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.“ If a malicious witness comes forward and accuses someone of a crime,then both the accuser and accused must appear before the Lord by coming to the priests and judges in office at that time.The judges must investigate the case thoroughly. If the accuser has brought false charges against his fellow Israelite,you must impose on the accuser the sentence he intended for the other person. In this way, you will purge such evil from among you.Then the rest of the people will hear about it and be afraid to do such an evil thing.You must show no pity for the guilty! Your rule should be life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.

A gossip goes around telling secrets, but those who are trustworthy can keep a confidence.

“ Do not steal.“ Do not deceive or cheat one another.

The law is for people who are sexually immoral, or who practice homosexuality, or are slave traders, liars, promise breakers, or who do anything else that contradicts the wholesome teaching

The lying witnesses said,“ This man is always speaking against the holy Temple and against the law of Moses.

Hiding hatred makes you a liar; slandering others makes you a fool.

And then seat two scoundrels across from him who will accuse him of cursing God and the king. Then take him out and stone him to death.”So the elders and other town leaders followed the instructions Jezebel had written in the letters.They called for a fast and put Naboth at a prominent place before the people.Then the two scoundrels came and sat down across from him. And they accused Naboth before all the people, saying,“ He cursed God and the king.” So he was dragged outside the town and stoned to death.
