在会幕内，耶和华跟摩西面对面说话，好像两个朋友谈话一样。然后，摩西返回营中，但他的年轻助手、嫩的儿子约书亚仍然留在会幕。

摩西为岳父米甸祭司叶忒罗放羊。一天他领着羊群穿越旷野，来到上帝的山——何烈山。

摩西对约书亚说：“选一些人出去迎战亚玛力人。明天，我会带着上帝的杖站在山顶上。”约书亚便遵照摩西的吩咐迎战亚玛力人，摩西、亚伦和户珥站在山顶上。摩西什么时候举手，以色列人就得胜；他的手什么时候垂下来，亚玛力人就占上风。不久，摩西的手疲倦发软，亚伦和户珥就抬来一块石头让摩西坐下，然后站在他的两边扶着他的手，他就稳稳地举着手，直到日落。这样，约书亚用刀杀败了亚玛力人。耶和华对摩西说：“我要抹去世人对亚玛力人的记忆。你要把这话记在书卷上作纪念，也要把这话告诉约书亚。”

摩西拣选的助手——嫩的儿子约书亚就说：“我主摩西，请你禁止他们。”

约书亚听见山下百姓嘈杂的喊叫声，便对摩西说：“营地里有打仗的声音。”
